Took an unexpected trip down memory lane as this video came up in a search for "Universal Robots" in Automation World! IMTS 2012 marked the company's official U.S. market entry - it was our first assignment for this small Danish startup that hardly anyone in North America had ever heard of. Tucked away in the back of the East Hall in Chicago's McCormick Place, Universal Robots' modest booth quickly started drawing large crowd sizes as attendees saw something never done before; operating an industrial robot without safety caging around it - even letting the robot arm run into people on purpose - as deftly demonstrated here by then CCO Thomas Visti. The first commercially viable cobot had arrived. The large industrial robot makers were quick to ridicule and dismiss it, but the quick market traction proved them all wrong. Fast forward 12 years, and UR remain the market leader and pioneer. Despite cobots now the fastest growing segment of industrial automation with new cobot competitors appearing at a breakneck pace, UR is still way ahead of the pack, holding a 34% global market share. It's been an incredible journey to help blaze this trail. How does remotely controlling a robot 2,000 miles away through a maze in an arcade game sound like? - Like a lot of fun :-) We had a blast working with Olis Robotics at the Automate Show in Chicago showing editors how the Olis technology enables not only robot monitoring but also remote error recovery. That robot in the arcade game is actually a robot running live in their Seattle office controlled directly by attendees from the show floor in the Windy City. Beyond the show floor, the Olis solution is already making a world of difference for integrators and end users, slashing unplanned robot downtime by up to 90%, enabling integrators to save precious time on on-site calls.
