  • Chief County Engineer Nick Powell was invited to speak to the Kenwood High School STEM Engineering Academy students last month. Nick spoke to approximately 110 students in a full auditorium on topics that included different types of engineers, college options versus technical degrees and programs, the importance of internships, and leadership, and he concluded the presentation with some project photos and a discussion to help these students better determine what field of engineering they may be most interested in studying as they enter college or their next steps after high school. The students responded with some great questions about engineering and construction.

  • At tonight's informal commission meeting, Mayor Wes Golden presented a proclamation to John Johnson with the Tennessee Department of Human Services to observe October 2024 as the 79th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is to provide education about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. The history of NDEAM traces back to 1945 when it began as a week that focused only on people with physical disabilities. Its name and scope have evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing the workforce inclusion of people with all natures of disabilities, and in 1988 Congress declared the entire month of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Workplaces welcoming the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, are a critical part of building an inclusive community and strong economy. Activities during this month will reinforce the value and talent people with disabilities add to our workplaces and communities and affirm Montgomery County's commitment to increasing access to good jobs for all workers, including disabled workers. It is appropriate to recognize and commemorate the 79th anniversary of NDEAM and pledge that Montgomery County will continue to take steps throughout the year to recruit, hire, retain, and advance individuals with disabilities. Community members are encouraged to observe October with appropriate programs and activities to ensure that disabled workers have access to good jobs every month of every year.
