America’s infrastructure is aging, and nowhere is this more evident than in our nation's bridges. According to a recently-released analysis of federal data by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), approx. 220,000 bridges across the country are in need of major repairs or replacement. Our experience in this critical area of infrastructure covers several bridges in the southeast, including the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project—the largest public works initiative in the Mid-Atlantic. Our team provided essential design oversight, construction engineering, and inspection services for the replacement of the bridge and surrounding interchanges. The 12-lane drawbridge has significantly reduced traffic interruptions by cutting annual bridge openings from 260 to just 65. Infrastructure projects like this show the importance of investment in repairing and enhancing America’s bridges. They’re not just a part of our landscape—they’re a lifeline for communities and economies. Let’s push for progress, innovation and safety for these critical structures. #innovation #transportation #bridges #infrastructure

On #WorldArchitectureDay, we celebrate the profound impact that architecture has on shaping our environment and communities. At McKissack & McKissack, we recognize that successful public spaces are born from collaboration, listening, and a deep understanding of our clients' needs. Our approach to design is rooted in the belief that architecture should not only reflect its surroundings but also elevate the experience for everyone who interacts with it. By blending site-specific inspiration with regional character, we create spaces that are as unique as they are functional. From the first sketches to the final touches during construction administration, our comprehensive project management ensures that every design brings together form, function, and beauty. It's a process that balances creativity with purpose, seamlessly guiding pedestrians and users through spaces that inspire. Today, we honor the architects, designers, and visionaries who turn dreams into reality and shape the world around us for the better. #WorldArchitectureDay2024 #architecture #AEC

Designing and constructing schools with direct input from the surrounding community is not just a trend — it's essential. As districts across the country renovate and build new facilities, we have to design with the end user in mind: the students, staff, and educators. At McKissack & McKissack, our work in the K-12 space has always been led by the needs of the community. That work spans communities across the United States; we’ve worked with DC Department of General Services, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), Dallas Independent School District, Fort Worth ISD, and Chicago Public Schools, among others. As part of our work serving as the program and construction management firm for Maryland Stadium Authority and Baltimore City Public Schools on the 21st Century Buildings Programs, we’ve renovated and replaced approximately 2.6 million sq.ft. of educational space. This is a project that’s touched the lives of over 10,000 Baltimore city students. Regardless of the scope or size of the project, our primary goal remains the same: Create functional spaces that foster core academic learning. The focus on sustainability, work-based learning, and innovative, tech-based curricula are now being integrated at the request of school communities. These additions reflect a broader understanding of what students need to thrive, both inside and outside the classroom. By prioritizing community input, we are building schools that truly serve the needs of all their users, creating environments where every student can succeed. We’re always interested in working with the next community or district to bring these new ideas to life. Send us a message to see how we can work together. #design #construction #schools

As we celebrate the 8th anniversary of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, we are proud to have been the project managers that navigated this groundbreaking project through design and construction. The impact this 380,000-square-foot landmark has had cannot be understated. By 2023, the museum had welcomed over 10 million visitors, and in 2022 alone, 1.2 million people visited — a testament to its vital role in educating and inspiring future generations. Our team provided comprehensive program and construction management services, including pre-design services, risk management, and construction oversight. This project was more than just constructing a building — it was about bringing to life a space that honors the deep contributions and history of African Americans in the United States. We are honored to have contributed to this monumental project. As we continue to work on transformative projects nationwide, we are dedicated to building more landmarks that inspire and educate for years to come. #NMAAHC #AfricanAmericanHistory #architecture #engineering #construction #landmarks #museums
