I am blessed that it took me until the age of 37 before I was faced with handling and maneuvering a traumatic incident with a loved one. This past week, through a true freak softball accident, my boyfriend went from being a very healthy, active individual to literally having his legs taken out from under him. I work in healthcare, so ignorantly I thought I knew how the journey/system worked. Goodness was I in for a lesson. First, we owe an incredible thank you to the team at McPherson Hospital, Inc. We spent 18 hours in the ER. The nurses and ER docs went above and beyond to advocate, support and provide us wonderful care. Small hospitals, especially ERs, can get an undeserved reputation but our experience was a testament to the personal care they provide. With an orthopedic trauma, we were faced with an uphill battle to get admitted to a hospital. We found this out with Salina Hospital as they did not deem his injuries as emergent, therefore, would not admit him. Quick note…Shane’s injuries occurred to both legs, including shredding both patella tendons aka he couldn’t walk. Next, I did what I could to work my connections with my home of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System 💙 I can’t thank my work bestie Andra Allen enough for reminding me to connect with the VA (Shane’s a Marine Vet), there is a beautiful ending to her recommendation. After that she connected me with Nikki and our hospitalist group. Thank you Linessa Rexford for helping me understand that with the severity of Shane’s injuries, HRMC would be unable to admit him due to lack of ortho support. This saved us hours!! Finally, after hours of playing phone tag and waiting for calls back we were able to get into ROBERT J. DOLE VA MEDICAL CENTER. I can not say enough wonderful things about our experience here. The nursing staff has been caring, connected and genuinely invested in our journey. Our Ortho, Dr. Burh was phenomenal and a true godsend. Shane’s injuries are quite unique and we heard often how rare it was to see both patella’s tear. Dr. Burh communicated the plan well and was very straightforward about the long recovery journey ahead. Every person here from EVS to Food Service has been helpful, respectful and loving out the mission of service. Why say all of this?! One, healthcare workers deserve our praise. Two, I’m indebted to their help and support. Three, traversing healthcare is hard! Lastly, be kind, ask questions and stay patient. #hrhs #healthcarejourney #va #kneeinjury
