Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, Inc. reposted this
A few months ago my colleagues (led by Joseph Zajdel, MBA) at F.N.B. Corporation organized a morning of volunteering at Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, Inc. This gave our team based here in the mid-Atlantic region the opportunity to give back. Last Thursday the volunteering occurred. No shocker, it was a fabulous event with a healthy balance of education, some laughs, and some genuine effort to support a great cause. I clap my hands for all of the MOW staff that work hard to aid our elderly population in maintaining independent living and their dignity. Thanks to all the MOW staff for all you do and, Joe, thanks for making this event happen and inviting me to participate. Interestingly, and on a bit of a personal note (my apologies :))... As a young boy I often 'helped' my mom who regularly volunteered at Meals on Wheels on Massachusetts' South Shore. I recall vividly jumping out of my mom's station wagon, hot meal in hand, and walking up to an elderly person's home and seeing their smile as I handed the meal to them. My mom would of course chat them up and lift their spirits. She was an angel like that as she had the gift of making everyone feel important and cared for. Many years later, my mom continued her volunteerism with MOW in Maryland even as she battled cancer. What's fascinating to me is how fate or the supernatural often surfaces spontaneously in our journey through life. When I registered for this particular event, I did so because I wanted to support my colleagues, it reminded me of my childhood, I assumed (correctly) it was still a worthy cause, and I had the time and ability to lend a hand. Candidly, I didn't think beyond these points at the time I registered. What is remarkable to me is during the event it dawned on me that it was occurring so close to the anniversary of my mother passing 16 years ago (today). It was a ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ moment where I thought to myself... there's additional reason I am here today, and we have an unaccounted volunteer with us too :). Maybe I am connecting to many dots, but it's things like this that just really make me wonder... Great work everyone and....Love ya Mom!

Did you know that more than 50% of our elderly community experience loneliness and isolation? At Meals on Wheels, our Call Connections program aims to combat this issue by reducing client isolation, improving their moods, and promoting social engagement, all essential for a healthy life. Clients are paired with a friendly volunteer who makes calls during the day or evening. To become a Call Connections volunteer please contact us at volunteer@mowcm.org.
