  • Nuestro Tiempo: OUR TIME IS NOW! A look at MEDA's time at the UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS) conference in Las Vegas. Over the past week over a dozen of our staff members, along with community partners and board members, met in Las Vegas with hundreds of other organizations to discuss the Latino perspective on pressing issues affecting the country like home ownership, health care, racial equity and education. UnidosUS, previously known as NCLR (National Council of La Raza), is the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization. Through our unique combination of expert research, advocacy programs, and an Affiliate Network of nearly 300 community-based organizations across the United States and Puerto Rico, UnidosUS simultaneously challenges the social, economic, and political barriers that affect Latinos at the national and local levels. As an UnidosUS affiliate, we are proud to be representing San Francisco and our Mission District at the largest gathering of Latinos and allies committed to social change. #MEDA #UnidosUS24

Chief Executive Officer at Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA)

This week I came to the end of a journey in one of the most transformational and meaningful experiences of my personal and professional life- my three- year tenure as the Chair of the Board of Directors of UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS). When I joined the UnidosUS Board of Directors in 2017, I brought to this role values grounded in my own experience growing up as a border kid in Juarez, Mexico, and immigrating to the United States at the age of 13. My parents worked tirelessly to build our future, eventually purchasing a home and sending me to college as a first generation college student. Their hard work paved the way for my own career, and the success of my family and generations to come. Joining UnidosUS has been a way for me to help ensure Latinos all over the United States have opportunities like I did, and that we are doing everything within our power to dismantle structural barriers that keep Latinos from achieving their dreams. Reflecting back to 2017, the status of Latinos in the United States was also exceptionally challenging. We were wholesale being labeled as criminals. Our people were being held in cages. And, two years later we were gunned down in El Paso– solely for being Latino. At  that time, I was contributing to make things better through our good work at MEDA in San Francisco, but it was clear some of the challenges and solutions went far beyond our City. They had to be addressed at the national level. For me, joining the UnidosUS Board was a way to contribute to the national strategy to build a better future for Latinos in the US. It has been an inspiration to be surrounded by thousands of people in the UnidosUS network who are working to do the same. UnidosUs gave a new dimension to my work, and another reason for being. I am glad to say that today UnidosUS is as strong as it has ever been, and has a clear vision for this country, and for our Latino community As I transition out of the Board Chair role, I want to thank the following people: The UnidosUS staff is brilliant, talented and committed and I thank you for your support. The UnidosUS Board of accomplished, dedicated and passionate professionals share my own lived experience, and many have been the first in their family to graduate college, or the first doctor, the first lawyer. I have learned so much from each of you, and am proud that you have become my friends and extended family. Working closely with the iconic and inspirational leader, Janet Murguía has been a most meaningful experience for me. Thank you Janet for trusting me with this great responsibility to serve as Board Chair and to work alongside you in our shared mission. Your energy and drive to affect positive change is second to none. It has truly been a privilege to serve UnidosUS and its 300+ affiliates. When I am in the company of the UnidosUS affiliate network, I know for certain that our future is bright.

  • One June 27, 2024 MEDA had the opportunity to participate in the inaugural Latino Opportunity Summit, hosted by ¡HICA! Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama and held on the campus of Samford University in Homewood, Alabama. This first of its kind event in the State of Alabama focused on Latino economic and social advancement, and the rich cultural history of Latinos in Alabama. Our National Partnerships Director, Juan Diego Castro, had the opportunity to share MEDA's model of place-based, equity-driven work with hundreds of professionals alongside an esteemed panel at the Summit. The focus was on lessons learned in the Mission that can inform community economic development efforts that support the growing Latino population in Alabama. The room, filled with members of the non-profit field, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, demographers, educators, and government agency representatives was full of vibrant conversations focusing on: - Generational wealth building through financial education, access to credit and access to capital - Creating platforms, capacity, and affordable spaces for entrepreneurs to thrive in competitive markets - The importance of elevating community voices as a tool to help neighborhoods be responsive to community needs Thank you to Carlos Enrique Alemán, Ph.D. and the whole ¡HICA! Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama team for an inspiring day dedicated to the advancement of Latinos, allyship and community building. #LatinoOpportunities #Leadership #DiversityandInclusion #CommunityEngagement #HICA #BirminghamAL #ProfessionalDevelopment #MissionRootsNationalLegacy To learn more about the Latino Opportunity Summit -> https://lnkd.in/e8DMaJNx To learn more about MEDA's partnership opportunities -> https://lnkd.in/gFys6VYA

  • Our community development financial institution (CDFI), Fondo Adelante, is honored to be the recipient of a generous grant and capital investment from the Opportunity Finance Network Finance Justice Fund to help support more Latino-owned and ran small businesses in San Francisco’s Mission District. The Finance Justice Fund is a socially responsible investment aiming to bring $1-billion in capital from corporate and philanthropic partners to individuals and communities in America’s most underestimated and underserved by mainstream finance. Fondo Adelante is a vehicle for MEDA to provide access to capital to small-business owners who cannot get a loan through a traditional bank with service areas across all nine Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma). CDFIs have a pivotal role to play in advancing social, economic, and racial justice.
