Day 3 of #MedLabWestAfrica Today was on Chemical pathology Generally Clinical chemistry is a vital field that plays a crucial role in diagnosis & management of wide range of conditions, It is the biochemical analysis of body fluids & other body products in support of the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including metabolic disorders. The role of clinical chemistry in early dictation diagnosis & management of metabolic syndrome: Metabolic Syndrome is a cluster of biochemical and physiological abnormalities associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, stroke & Type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome includes: High blood pressure Insulin resistance Obesity Dyslipidemia The role of clinical chemistry in diagnosis and management of metabolic syndrome: 1) Accurate, precise & reliable results at all times 2) Biochemical variable such as; a) Lipid profile b) Microalbumin: is small amounts of albumin in urine, it may be one of the first signs of kidney disease. The acceptable amount of albumin in urine is 30 mg/d values above 300 mg/d (200 ug/min) indicates overt proteinurea. 3) Inflammatory markers such as; a) CRP: C-reactive protein is an annular pentameric protein found in blood plasma, whose circulating concentrations rise in response to inflammation. b) hs-CRP : A high level of hs-CRP in the blood has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks. Also, people who have had a heart attack are more likely to have another heart attack if they have a high hs-CRP level. 4) Hormonal markers such as; Insulin These tests should be suggested for those who presents with at least one component of the cluster. Addition of some mathematical models of the ratio of the biochemical and hormonal analytes can provide a better information. ✔ Mathematical models such as: HOMA-IR HOMA-B Castelli Risk index 1 Castelli Risk index II Atherogenic coefficient The Atherogenic Index of plasma CONCLUSION: ✓ Reverting to African traditional lifestyles is a potential point of action to prevent the development of metabolic syndrome in Africans. Thus, paying attention to African local cardio-protecive diets once again: Improving on our level of physical activity structured into the activities of daily living of the individuals will help. This was just a tip to the bunch of Educative topics that was discussed throughout this event. It was really educative & interesting Event, meeting with professional colleagues far and wide Ogechukwu Anyanwu , Chiefs Dr Nsikak Etim , FADEKEMI IRUEGBUKPE , Shared great ideas together. we've been updated with latest insights, innovations and discoveries in the field of Medical Laboratory Science & beyond in these 3 days conference/Exhibition Thank you Informa Markets mlscn Medlab West Africa Special Thanks to the Academic Contributors of this Event Dr. Donald Ibe Ofili, PhD, MSc, IFBA CP Akyala Ishaku Ph.D Dr. Aliu Israel Nonye Umahi Nneka Osobukola Esther Adejumo, Ph.D, FMLSCN, FWAPCMLS

Day 1 of Medlab West Africa was just the beginning, but Day 2 of the conference took things to a whole new level as we delved into the fascinating world of Molecular Diagnosis! The Conference kicked off with the keynote speaker, Dr Ayorinde Babatunde James (Ph.D.) speaking on the topic ‘Redesigning diagnosis with Next Gen Technologies’ where he expertly explored the intersection of molecular diagnosis and emerging technologies, setting the stage for an engaging panel discussion. The panel session moderated by Dr Francisca Nwaokorie and other awesome panelists like Dr Japhet Erasmus AISONI, Ph.D. M.Sc, MBA and Dr Veronica Nnena was intellectually stimulating and stirring. This session was an eye opener for me as very intelligent issues were addressed. And I must say it was an auspicious start to an Incredible day. Next was Dr Jean Njab keynote speech on “Adapting molecular Diagnosis for evolving disease. In his session he shed light on evolving landscape of Laboratory practices and how the Laboratory has moved from just the bench to computer and how they can be adapted for evolving diseases. He also spoke on the market drivers for molecular diagnosis like every laboratory diagnosis which are Accuracy, Timeliness and Reliability and the how AI helps to enhance these drivers. Dr jean njab highlighted how this translates to the laboratory Data and the future. His simple yet Profound definition of AI as “telling a machine to do routine work because it's boring” really resonated with me The subsequent panel discussion, featuring Dr. Elochukwu Adibo and Dr. Japhet Erasmus AISONI, Ph.D. M.Sc, MBA delved into the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in point-of-care testing, sparking important conversations about its impact on patient care. The Final session was by Dr. Francisca Nwaokorie who explored the recent research and painting a picture of the future with the endless possibilities in the field of molecular diagnosis. Her session on on recent research and the future of molecular diagnosis left me feeling inspired and energized. The endless possibilities in this field are truly remarkable As a Next Generation Scientist, I feel a renewed sense of responsibility to contribute to the positive change and innovation in molecular diagnosis. Exciting times lie ahead for my team (Toheeb Owoiya , Abdulbasit Abdulwasii and Adegoke Emmanuel) and I #medlab #medlabwestAfrica #biomedicalscientist

ABOUT MEDLAB WEST AFRICA 2024 EVENT: And it came to pass 😇! - To say that it was amazing (impressive and excellent) is an understament. - The Clinical Chemistry Track of the MedLab West Africa Conference was a reference point. - The team members of the Clinical Chemistry Scientific Committee, Speakers and Panelists were just the best 💯/💯! -(Probably, because we had the extra advantage of being the Day 3 i.e last day presenters), We had a superb strategy and organisation; afterall, we had seen and learnt from the gaps of some previous sessions and we leveraged on it 😂😂😂. . - Clinical Chemistry/Chemical Pathology is my PASSION. It still remains my speciality of preference among the 4 major areas of Specilization in Medical Laboratory Science. - I love how it combines Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Toxicology, Public Health, Molecular Biology/Diagnostics, Technology (and advances/new trends in Technology), and merge them all together to tell the story (Pathology) of Chemical constitutions in the Body and Biochemical mechanisms of the body. - Chemical Pathology/Clinical Chemistry it is for me any day, any time. I love it! It keeps me in my element 😇. - We had 4 topics in the Clinical Chemistry Track (Day 3). The audience/participants' engagement was great 👍. - I will repost some reports on our session and then probably do some more write up as time permits. - 🤔 Preparing for the 2 out of the 4 topics that I was directly involved in, with the very demanding duties of a Head of Department aka HoD, plus other extra unexpected official assignments was a "tall order"; but then, at the end, we did justice to the topics. All our 4 topics were well delivered/addressed, with some new lessons learnt, some new skill set acquired, and some new networks established. - Thank you, Dear Organisers of MedLab WestAfrica. - Welldone, The Overall Chair Dr. Donald Ofili, Director Accreditaions, MLSCN.🏅 - Special thank you to all attendees and participants 🙏. - 📸 **See the Erudite Faculty Speakers, Panelists, Scientific Committee/participants for the Clinical Chemistry Track, and some very Dear Associates in the 10 pictures below. #MetabolicSyndrome #MetabolicDiseases #DiabetesMellitus #Cancer #NonCommunicableDiseases #NCD #ChronicNonCommunicableDiseases #cNCDs #NCDPreventionDiagnosisManagement #WeMustWin #WeMove🏅🏆 #"Thus far, the Lord has helped us🏋🏻♀️"! #MedLabWestAfrica #MLWA #MedicAfrica #BabcockUniversity #MLSCN #ClinicalChemistry #ChemicalPathology #WestAfrica #Nigeria #NCDC #MedicalLaboratoryScience #ILoveToTeach👩🏻🏫👩🏻🔬 #SDG3 Through #SDG4 #QualityEducation (leads to) #GoodHealth #WellBeing

I had amazing time attending the recent Medlab West Africa conference organized by informa market in partnership with MLSCN. It was truly an extraordinary experience. The gathering featured numerous professional leaders sharing their expertise, experiences, offering valuable insights on different topics. The attendance was great with Key topics listed below. Day1: Laboratory Management and Quality - Equitable Access to Quality Diagnostic Testing in Communities - Medical Laboratory Services in the Era of Artificial Intelligence - Institutionalizing Biosafety and Biosecurity Practices in Medical Laboratories in West Africa Day 2: - Emerging Infectious Disease and future pandemic - Drug Laboratory Test Interactions - Pandemic Preparedness, Detection and Response - Determinants of inter-species, Intra-species transmissibility of infectious agents. Day3: Metabolic syndrome: a growing problem in Sub-Sahara Africa , the role of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory in early diagnosis and management. - Emerging technologies in diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus, the place of Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. - Achieving Advanced Accuracy and Quality care in the practice of self monitoring. - Emerging Technologies: new trends in the diagnosis of metabolic diseases and cancer - the role of Clinical Chemistry Laboratory - Analytical Quality Requirements in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring The conference provided an incredible opportunity for networking and was inspiring. Private Public Partnerships was discussed, in cases of access to quality health in rural communities, one of the speakers advised the Federal Government to collaborate with private healthcare and NGOs. For a private laboratory to run full laboratory service, pay competitive salary with the guy in lagos / Abuja , have comfortable call room, the equipment and refrigerator working in a conducive environment with constant power supply, FG can provide building / facility , NGO can provide part payment and the private sector brings the service. He gave a scenario, in a case where the private laboratory is charging 4,000 for FBC or malaria and the villager has 1,000, the NGO can support with the remaining payment. The villager pays part payment and ngo completes it and the private sector is able to pay staff well to retain the quality staff and make the work environment comfortable. We were advised to do more courses. Courses from council Courses from Africa CDC Courses from IFBA, etc. We were also advised to participate in medical laboratory science mentorship programs. Thank you mlscn Thank you Informa Markets Thank you Medlab West Africa We look forward to next year conference happening April 21-23rd 2025.
