Yesterday Congress took a historic step toward addressing the megafire crisis as the House passed H.R. 8790, the Fix Our Forests Act on a robust bipartisan vote (268-151). House passage of this bipartisan bill is a resounding victory for proponents of pragmatic policy solutions to end the megafire crisis and we will continue working to improve the bill as we look ahead to the Senate. Amongst other things, the Fix Our Forests Act: - Establishes the Fireshed Center – a transformative joint office between the Forest Service and USGS – to help modernize wildfire decision making and break down information barriers across all of government - Accelerates urgent forest management projects while maintaining critical environmental protections by expanding categorical exclusions to 10,000 acres (requested by state governments, including California) - Helps our wildland firefighters and their families by establishing a casualty assistance program at DOI - Recognizes the role that natural fire and cultural/prescribed fire play in healthy ecosystems and emphasizes the need for Tribal partnerships and sovereignty - Includes a pilot program for innovative wildfire mitigation technologies and invests in improved biochar utilization Check out our 2-minute highlight reel to learn more about the Fix Our Forests Act and for a special shoutout to Megafire Action from the House floor! The megafire crisis is solvable.
About us
Megafire Action has one mission: to end the megafire crisis within a decade. In the last 40 years we’ve seen a new type of fire emerge: Megafire. Megafires burn 100k acres or more, often with an intensity that devastates ecosystems. And they’re getting more common every year: 17 of California’s 20 largest fires have happened in the last 20 years. Megafire Action is the first organization focused solely on enacting policies to solve this crisis. We want prevention and mitigation to get the same focus as suppression and emergency response. Getting there will mean bringing good fire back into Western ecosystems and creating thousands of jobs in rural communities. We’ll also need to improve our ability to detect, track, and predict megafire behavior. Megafire is solvable, but we need solutions that meet the scale and urgency of the problem. A lot needs to happen and we’re going to hold policymakers accountable for progress.

Breakthroughs on the horizon - happy to support Earth Fire Alliance on this intelligence endeavor. "There's got to be a better way" ~ Kate Dargan Marquis Matt Weiner Gabe Kleinman Kelly Martin Kim-Mai Cutler
Proud, Excited, Humbled – that’s how I feel as I watched our partners discuss FireSat and Earth Fire Alliance this morning in Google’s new sustainability initiative... and as we announce that we are on track for a 2025 launch of the first FireSat protoflight. With continued funding support from Google.org and our growing group of philanthropic partners as well as our science, technology and public safety partners, Earth Fire Alliance is accelerating toward our goal of delivering transformational fire data to the fire community as quickly as possible. If you haven’t seen the video yet – take a look. Kate Dargan Marquis, Mark Finney, and Jason Forthofer provided powerful perspectives for what we envision as a new way to observe the impact of wildfire, serve our communities, and conserve our planet’s resources. Chris Van Arsdale, Cathy Olkin, and John Burge discussed the promise and work we have set out ahead of us to realize the power of space and AI. #EarthFireAlliance #Google #wildfires #AI #FireSat

In his latest piece, our National Policy Director Eric Horne underscores the critical need for a federal Wildfire Intelligence Center to revolutionize how we respond to wildfires. As a top priority for Megafire Action, the Center would leverage cutting-edge technology to support real-time decision-making across all levels of government and all phases of the fire cycle. With growing momentum in Congress, Megafire Action is poised to play a prominent role in bringing the Center to life. https://lnkd.in/gaJher4H Gabe Kleinman Kate Dargan Marquis Matt Weiner Eric Horne Teresa Feo Kelly Martin Keith J. Last week, Megafire Action visited the Eldorado National Forest to learn about the restoration work being financed by Blue Forest’s Forest Resilience Bond and implemented by the Upper Mokelumne River Watershed Authority. Blue Forest’s work in the Eldorado National Forest demonstrates the potential for private capital to help us achieve forest restoration at the pace and scale needed to avert catastrophic outcomes. For us, the site visit painted a clear picture:

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released an investigative report into the Forest Service’s prescribed burn protocols. Requested by Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, the report comes in the aftermath of the devastating Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire in northern New Mexico. Accidents like the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire are exceptionally rare. GAO’s recommendations on the need to improve the information, tools, and technology the Forest Service uses to support prescribed fire planning and implementation would make them more rare. Congress should act on the recommendations to “develop applications that identify optimal burn windows based on historical weather and climate data, and improve fire behavior modeling tools to better predict how intensely a prescribed fire will burn and how it may spread.” https://lnkd.in/gScy8QqR

Driving through Wyoming yesterday, I was fortunate to come across a large-scale prescribed fire project. I stopped to chat with the Heli-Rappeller crew manager about how the burn was going and what he’s been seeing in the field the last few years. The takeaway was clear: if Congress doesn’t extend and increase the 2021 pay increase for wildland firefighters, “you won’t recognize this crew, my guys are going to leave.” With ever growing demands on the Forest Service to increase the pace and scale of treatments, we’ve got to figure out how to avoid a mass exodus and attract new talent. These guys are doing crucial work to protect our forests/communities and deserve better.
