Restoring natural systems through adaptive planning and market incentives
About us
Unlocking nature-based climate solutions by accelerating wildland resilience. Vibrant Planet is a prioritization system for land management restoration efforts. Our software provides real-time scenario planning, monitoring, and reporting for natural resource managers, insurers, utilities, and other stakeholders seeking to improve community and wildland resilience to wildfire and climate change. Our system calculates the potential avoided loss and ecosystem services value of each land management and community wildfire protection treatment, helping to qualify projects for carbon, water, biodiversity, and other types of conservation finance.

The wildfires in the Los Angeles area sadden us. As a team of many fire scientists, ecologists, and foresters, last week we turned inward, wondering how we could contribute our own knowledge and understanding of data to get involved. An outcome of this reflection can be found in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eGqTKp6n. Here, we analyze burn probability, housing density, ember load, and fire intensity datasets from our Pyrologix team to identify wildfire risk warning signs that existed in the Los Angeles area. The blog shares a forecasted analysis of where similar warning signs are prevalent in other communities across the Western US. We hope this data can get into the hands of more communities and land managers mitigating wildfires, motivating more preventative action. 💚

🎉 Big news: Our core model, VibrantVS, sets a new industry standard for forest mapping accuracy. In head-to-head testing, it outperformed the leading benchmark canopy height models from Meta, LANDFIRE & ETH. Read the blog: https://lnkd.in/eEVgsnW5 By delivering a more consistent, accessible representation of landscape vegetation, our customers get better landscape segmentation and more accurate wildfire project planning – supporting more resilient communities, ecosystems, and beyond!

At the largest meeting of earth and space scientists, our science team debuted some of their most innovative work. Their findings are propelling our industry forward, and helping expand our collective understanding of the world around us. Topics included: 🔍 Industry leading canopy height predictions from our core model VibrantVS 💧 How debris and sedimentation from wildfire can impact drinking water 🌲 More comprehensive lifecycle analysis of carbon sequestered in forests And that's just the tip of the spear. Great post from Daniel Berlant at California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) on the difference between catastrophic wildfire smoke and Rx fire smoke. Vibrant Planet is thrilled to be working with CAL FIRE to get more Rx fire, or beneficial fire, back on California's fire adapted landscapes -- ecosystems that evolved with regular, natural fire. Rx fire restores landscape resilience and keeps fires from becoming catastrophic by removing fuels.
Curious about the differences between smoke from wildfires and prescribed fires? Let’s break it down! While both produce smoke, prescribed fires are a key tool in preventing catastrophic wildfires by restoring California’s natural fire cycles. These managed burns are carefully planned to reduce health and environmental impacts, in contrast to the dense, long-lasting smoke from uncontrolled wildfires. Stay informed by downloading the California Smoke Spotter app for local updates and tips to protect yourself from smoke. For live fire, smoke, and haze forecasts, and to see where prescribed fires are happening across the state, visit the CAL FIRE incident map at fire.ca.gov. Together, we can protect our health and our environment!
