Student Midwife Creates App To Recognize Conditions On Black And Brown Skin 📱 “Ruby Jackson, a 23-year-old student midwife at the University of Brighton, has developed an app, ‘Melanatal,’ to address gaps in the recognition of maternal and neonatal conditions on Black and brown skin. Her app aims to educate both clinicians and patients on how conditions such as jaundice, pre-eclampsia, and mastitis appear on darker skin tones, a subject historically underrepresented in medical training. Jackson’s inspiration for Melanatal came during her placement at a neonatal unit in Ghana, where she realized that key symptoms—like jaundice—present differently on darker skin. She had previously been taught to look for ‘yellow skin,’ which isn’t always applicable to Black or brown patients. This moment led her to understand how easily signs could be missed, prompting her to develop a solution. The app, currently in development, will feature hyper-realistic medical illustrations and aims to reduce race-based health inequalities. ‘This app will help provide the much-needed information for black and brown women who are nearly four times more likely to die in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum in comparison to white women,’ Jackson told University of Brighton. ‘Through Melanatal, clinicians can get better knowledge to care for black babies who have the highest rate of both stillbirth and neonatal death.’” Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVsBgiBa #WomenInSTEM #GirlsInSTEM #STEMGems #GiveGirlsRoleModels

Championing Birth Equity & Justice | Maternal Health Activist | Stillbirth Prevention Parent Advocate

If you have any time in your busy weeks I implore you to do what you can to help us get the SHINE for Autumn Act passed before another year ends. It should only take a few mins. to contact your legislators and make sure they are co-sponsoring this necessary bill. That simple action will help future families avoid the life-time of grief and trauma we endure. Don’t you want to know you were a part of stopping stillbirth?? I know you do! And it is as easy as going to Deb’s website www.shineforautumnact.org to follow her instructions and scripts. If you have any questions or concerns about advocating please ask me. I was never this involved with anything until Owen died, then fighting for change to end this crisis that took our son became all I could do to move forward. Some days are hard, sometimes we get discouraged, but we never give up, because the next day can be a win! 👏🏼🤩 Trust me, it’s a really great feeling to know our voices are heard and we are helping to save lives. Join us! Thank you! 💙

Another great trip to the Hill in the books! I want to begin by expressing my immense gratitude to every stillbirth advocate, MCH stakeholder, and Congressional Champion who came together last week, in honor of National Stillbirth Prevention Day. Your efforts are helping to SHINE a spotlight on our nation’s devastating stillbirth crisis; bringing this taboo issue out of the shadows and into the light where it can no longer be ignored. However, our work is far from over; it’s imperative that we get SHINE passed this year! Since the bicameral and bipartisan Stillbirth Health Improvement and Education for Autumn Act, H.R. 5012/S. 2647 was first introduced on October 5, 2021, nearly 67,000 much wanted and deeply loved babies have been born still; and with each passing day, more babies die. Every mom--suburban, urban, or rural, deserves the right to a healthy birth outcome, and sadly, at this rate, they don’t. The need for action has never been more urgent. We are so close, and yet so far.... With the end of the 118th Congress rapidly approaching, it deeply concerns me that the SHINE for Autumn Act has yet to advance; especially with the overwhelming bipartisan support the bill garnered in the 117th and continues to receive in this Congress. As of today, SHINE has 102 bipartisan cosponsors in the House, 37 bipartisan cosponsors in the Senate, and over 330 endorsing organizations. I want to believe that this kind of support will translate into meaningful action soon, but we can’t afford to wait and see. Time is not on our side. We must keep working TOGETHER to get this bipartisan solution to ending our country’s stillbirth crisis across the finish line! Let’s make our voices heard--please join me in our final push for a brighter future for every mom, and baby! Over the coming days please urge your Members of Congress to prioritize stillbirth by passing the SHINE for Autumn Act before the end of the 118th Congress! Your help is vital to the success of this bill. We MUST do better for every mom and baby, and we CAN with SHINE! Centering the voices and lived experiences of Black Birthing Women and Black Preemie Families

On Monday, September 23rd, Jenne Johns, President of Once Upon A Preemie, Inc., along with state, local, and community maternal health advocates shared lived experiences and solutions to the Black Maternal Health Crisis in Philadelphia during the statewide Maternal Health series led by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Human Services. Panelists: PA Secretary of Human Services- Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH, ; PA Secretary of Health-Dr. Debra Bogen; Deputy Commissioner of Product Regulation at The PA Insurance Department Shannen Logue, LaQuesha G.; Dr. Aasta Mehta; Karen Pollack, and State Representatives Gina H. Curry and Morgan Cephas, along with special guest Senator Sharif Street. Their leadership, insights, and openness were invaluable. The discussion focused on the long-term impacts of severe maternal mortality and morbidity in the Black community and the importance of creating culturally congruent spaces between government, healthcare providers, and the community. We encourage you to share your voice on the Maternal Health solutions within Pennsylvania by completing this survey that will inform Governor Josh Shapirp’s Maternal Strategic Plan:https://lnkd.in/ejKr-74g Thank you to Nikki Bagby for hosting this event at the Lenfest Center at North10. #onceuponapreemie #onceuponapreemieacademy #nicu #NICUawarenessmonth #North10 #Community #MomnibusPA ##MaternalHealth #BlackMaternalHealth #CommunityAdvocacy #PennsylvaniaHealth #HealthEquity #BlackMaternalHealthMatters #OnceUponAPreemie #PanelDiscussion #SupportBlackMothers

The Cooperative's subsidiary, Family Health Initiatives (FHI), was well represented at the 2024 Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP) Conference in California. This year's theme: 'Partnering with Purpose.' Director of Public Health Programs, Cathy Butler-Witt and Lead Data Analyst, Kerry Millen, attended the conference and had a virtual poster presentation: 'NJ Maternal Experiences Survey Project: Developing Collaborative Solutions by Centering the Voices of Birthing People and Partnering with Community-Based Organizations.' Among the workshops Cathy and Kerry attended was: 'My Black Health is Beautiful: Driving Transformation Through Partnership and Representation.' The workshop curriculum was a series of free lesson plans that intersect reproductive and Black maternal health, developed via a collaboration between Melinated Moms, New Jersey Black Women Physicians Association, Planned Parenthood of Northern, Central, and Southern New Jersey and The Cooperative. Thank you to Cathy and Kerry for representing Family Health Initiatives on the national stage! #FamilyHealthInitiatives #AMCHP #PartneringWithPurpose
