A paper published by Phillips and Picard outlines a novel approach looking at the aetiology of neurodegenerative disorders. They consider these disorders through the lens of metabolic dysregulation and mitochondrial dysfunction and posit how lifestyle interventions may counter this dysregulation via mitohormisis effects. Dr Phillips gave a fantastic talk on this subject at the recent Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners symposium, so it is wonderful that his insights can be shared through this paper. Having a great time updating my slides and references for my CEU training on how psychotherapists can support individuals using the ketogenic diet and other metabolic therapies as a treatment for mental illness. So much really well done research has dropped! I teach this course every 3 to 4 months and everytime I do, it is updated. Many have asked why it just simply isnt an on demand option. Well it could be. It would mean 8 hours of recording and editing just to update it every 3 to 4 months or a couple of years. But I think that takes an element of practice and discussion away that builds shifts in practice. This training has actual practice in case conceptualization and treatment targets. New information for the bio pillar of biopsychosocial practice isnt sufficient enough bring use of that knowledge into clinical practice. You know I am right. How many recorded trainings have you gone to and thought, Oh that's cool! I am going to start to do that! And then didn't? I know there has been many in my clinical practice over the last 17 years. We just dont learn and master that way. And while I absolutely want you to earn your CEUs and make it easy for you, I am actually more interested in making sure that we integrate this knowledge into our practices well, and serve and support this patient population using this diet as a treatment from the place of competency they deserve. Which means that by the end of my training, you are not only going to understand the latest research. You are going to understand how this fits into your existing treatment paradigms. You are going to be able to talk to patients about the underlying mechanism for why it can work, just like you currently talk about medications. You are going to have a better grasp of the multicultural and ethical considerations, and you are going to understand your role and how to use your skills to best support the increasing patient populations coming to you and asking you about it. You are going to know exactly what's up after this training. And I just cannot express to you how grateful people are to find ketogenic-informed mental health professionals.
