Sedlacek Treatment Center is celebrating 50 years of service to the Cedar Rapids area! Sedlacek first opened on October 25, 1974. Our counselors offer non-judgmental, compassionate care to individuals suffering with substance use, as well as their families, in a safe and comfortable setting. You can do it. We can help. "The Sedlacek program offers a holistic approach to address addiction," one Aftercare support group member shared. "I learned the triggers that caused me to drink, as well as approaches and resources to understand how to deal with these triggers. Jack is an outstanding teacher with a great sense of compassion and humor." Thank you to all of the staff at Sedlacek Treatment Center for their dedication to helping individuals (and their loved ones) who are battling substance abuse. We're so grateful for the care and guidance you provide to these members of our community!

We're observing National Pharmacy Week to recognize and celebrate the vital role that our pharmacy staff plays in delivering exceptional patient care! The Mercy Pharmacy team ensures safe and effective medication use; offers consultation services, drug information and patient education; collaborates in multidisciplinary initiatives; precepts and teaches; provides formulary management; prioritizes quality and process improvement; and controls and distributes medication. Throughout the week, the Pharmacy department celebrated with activities hosted by the PERC team (Pharmacy Engagement and Recognition Committee) in collaboration with our Pharmacy residents. Thank you, Pharmacy team!

Congratulations to Mercy Pediatric Clinic Patient Service Coordinator Tonya, who recently received a Mercy Touch Award! “Tonya works at our check out desk and not only schedules patients for their next visit, she also engages in lots of conversations with patient families,” her nominator wrote. Recently, Tonya formed an especially meaningful connection with a new parent who seemed to be struggling. Tonya left her desk to provide needed assistance and offer a comforting hug and prayers to the new parent, which were gladly accepted. Tonya’s nominator shared, “This story just encompasses who Tonya is. She is a woman of faith and humility. I am proud to call Tonya not only my coworker, but friend.” Thank you for your kindness, Tonya!

Special thanks to the Emergency Department’s Blake, RN, and Brooke, RN, who were recently recognized with Mercy Touch awards for their comprehensive care of a patient and her family. "Blake and Brooke were the most amazing nurses both when treating my [loved one] and helping us as a family cope with what had happened," their nominator wrote. "They went above and beyond to make sure that she was well taken care of, and they both made sure that we were taken care of as a family. My husband initially was at the hospital with [our loved one] alone ... and Blake made sure to come over to him and get down and let him know that they were going to take care of our [loved one] and that she was right where she needed to be. Both Blake and Brooke went above and beyond our expectations and they showed us compassion at a very hard time ... Both of these individuals will be remembered by our family for a very long time for the amazing care they provided. We will forever be grateful that they were there ... to take care of our [loved one]." Well done, Blake and Brooke! Thank you for being just what this family needed at just the right time.

If you're in the area of Bowman Woods Elementary School in Marion, you might notice a new road sign -- Dr. Rick Place, named after Mercy Pediatric Clinic's very own Rick Mersch, MD!   Last spring, Rick's sister, Angela, bid on a Linn-Mar Foundation silent auction opportunity to name the street sign at the elementary school where she and her siblings attended as children.   When she won, Angela decided to name it after her brother, whose patients know him as "Dr. Rick."    "He's such a good person, and I think he deserves a little recognition," Angela said.   Recently, several of Dr. Rick's coworkers from the Pediatric Clinic took the opportunity to visit the site in honor of their friend and colleague. The named sign will be posted for one year.

Congratulations to the Intensive Care Center's Martin, RN, who recently received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses! Martin's nominator wrote that he took care of the patient as if they were his own family member: "The love, kindness, caring compassion that he showed my [loved one] the first day that he arrived put my [loved one] at complete ease. He even shaved his scruffy face for him and washed behind his ears... He was so tender and gentle and very attentive to his needs. The words he spoke were filled with love and made us all feel like we were more at home than in a hospital! When [my loved one] became incoherent, Martin kept him comfortable and also focused on how we were feeling and what we needed! The respect and dignity he showered on [my loved one] and us was first-class! "After [my loved one] passed, sweet Martin continued to comfort us with the most beautiful words... We all totally agree that there's no one more deserving than Martin, the beautiful man from the Outback that God blessed us with to make this journey way better than we could ever have imagined." Well done, Martin! Thank you for being exactly what this patient's family needed at this time. We appreciate the sincere and heartfelt care you provide!
