Across our Mercy communities, we create a circle of care, compassion, and hope around not only our patients, but also our co-workers. Earlier this year after being impacted by devastating storms, countless individuals came forward to support our neighbors around the region through crisis and emergency relief funds. During our MercyWay co-worker giving campaign and throughout the year, our dedicated teams have the opportunity to give back to one another, bringing hope and relief to those facing unexpected hardships in our hospitals and communities. We are grateful for the co-workers who lift each other up, and the patients who inspire us to give our best. Aura Hickey moved from Nicaragua to Berryville, Arkansas at age 16 without knowing any English. However, she learned quickly at her school's ESL course, and by age 19 was in nursing school. Upon graduating, she got a job at Mercy and has been a co-worker ever since! Today, she serves as the director of primary care nursing at Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas, and she offered to share her story in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month. When Aura first moved here, she says that the support of her new friends from the ESL class helped her feel more at home. “The power of community with people who understand the unique challenges that immigrants experience helped get me through school,” she said. She currently serves as a diversity officer, and served as director of population health before her current role, so her dedication to community health and wellness has always been present. Aura loves to dance — especially Salsa — and feels a connection to her culture when she does. She still cooks the way her grandmother taught her, and thinks of her every time she makes Indio Viejo, a traditional stew from Nicaragua made with vegetables, garlic, shredded meat, and herbs. Although she hasn't visited Nicaragua in seven years, Aura plans to visit in the next year to see her family. She loves to visit the farmers markets there, where she says the fresh ingredients make the food taste better. She chose these two pictures to show an example of a salsa dancing dress, and because she'll never forget marching every year at school for their country's Independence Day on September 15. That date marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through October 15. We're proud to celebrate with all our Hispanic co-workers, patients and friends!
