Papa was able to find a doctor in his country that promised to remove the tumor growing on his jaw. This rare opportunity cost him thousands. Right before the operation began, a power surge hit the hospital. With no way of knowing if the machines would stay operational, Papa was forced to leave without healing. Years later he found himself in a different operating room... one aboard a floating hospital ship. And at last, he knew his pain was coming to an end. #Papa #HopeAndHealing #Surgery

In many parts of Sierra Leone, life for kids with medical conditions like Mamadou’s can be difficult. According to Francess Tommy, a national crewmember from Sierra Leone, “People discriminate against them, relate the condition to witchcraft, and some neighbors will not let their children play with them because of the belief that they are possessed.” The majority of children with cataracts or even more severe vision impairments grow up to become beggars on the streets, unable to work or provide for themselves. You can read the story of how Mamadou discovers a brighter future by reading his story in our blog: www.mercyships.org/mamadou #MercyShips #GlobalMercy #SafeSurgery #HopeAndHealing #Ophthalmic
