“So, what do you do?” It’s a question we all get asked, but for Meridianites it’s a question without an easy answer. Every project at Meridian is unique, and while we believe there’s strength in our unique approach to the work, it also makes it hard to sum up what we do in an elevator pitch (especially if that elevator is only going a couple of floors!). We often say, “We are a mission-driven, nonprofit consultancy,” but what does that mean? To us, it means we’re committed to helping our partners improve lives, the environment, and the economy. For over 25 years, individuals, businesses, government entities, NGOs, and more have relied on us to help them tackle complex environmental and social issues. We bring a fresh approach to our partnerships—whether we’re providing strategic advice, incubating a new organization, facilitating contentious dialogue, or designing a multi-year collaborative. We co-create spaces where participants feel heard and invested in finding solutions and crafting a shared vision. We want there to be enough buy-in on that final vision that the people at the tables we’re facilitating feel empowered and motivated to execute that vision in the real world. As a seamstress myself who has also designed some of my own dresses, I was excited to attend the #FusionFashionTechSummit at the Fashion Institute of Technology during #ClimateWeek2024! This fascinating event about the sustainable future of #fashion covered so many different topics from #biomimicry to #blockchain & #AI and everything in between including #regenerativefeedstock and recycling #preciousmetals in #jewelry (did you know that the amount of silver in one pair of earrings might be enough for a #solarpanel?)! During the event we also heard from artists Xiaobi Iris Pan and Mira Hapsari who are making an art installation #GatheredClothsVR to raise awareness about the critical global textile waste in the fashion industry (for more info, see: https://lnkd.in/g3y5qUXe). One of my key takeaways from these panels was the interconnectedness of textiles with other domains such as #agriculture production. For example, agriculture production often produces a high percentage of wasted materials (which are often burned, emitting more carbon to the atmosphere). Finding innovative new ways to use this discarded cellulose to create fiber for textiles is one way to minimize waste in the food industry while simultaneously reducing the need to use more land to create additional fabric. These are #datagaps that could be productively explored… Check out projects at Meridian Institute focused on #circularity! #ClimateWeekNYC

*No system is perfect—even the most valuable ones need to adapt over time to stay aligned with their purpose and serve the commons.* Capitalism has been a powerful engine for innovation and progress, but it’s also contributed to the depletion of our natural resources and deepened global inequalities. We stand at a critical juncture where we must reform capitalism into something more inclusive and regenerative. The viability of humankind and the capacity for our natural systems to sustain us depends on it. I’m excited to share that we’re launching a new blog series from Third Nature Investments on “Reimagining Capitalism” digging into this exact (hefty!) topic, and you can check out my intro post here: https://lnkd.in/ectk8F9G Over the next several weeks, the series will explore how different stakeholders—from investors to businesses to consumers—can contribute to this shift and we’ll provide actionable steps for embracing a capitalism that works for all. Redesigning entrenched systems takes patience and collective action -- I hope you'll stick around for the series and share your own thoughts/reactions/ideas here as we go.

It was a pleasure to support the amazing Accelerator for Systemic Risk Assessment (ASRA) with their Next Generation cohort workshop and the launch of their State of the Practice Report in New York! I encourage anyone interested in systemic risk and integrating systems thinking into decision-making to check out the report and ASRA's work!

#ClimateWeek is off to a great start for the Meridian team! On Saturday, our CEO, Todd Barker, MC’d the Accelerator for Systemic Risk Assessment (ASRA) event, called "From Multidimensional Challenges to Multidimensional Possibilities: Facing Global Risks Together". The event coincided with the launch of ASRA’s latest report, "Facing Global Risks with Honest Hope," developed by the #ASRANetwork. The report offers bold, actionable strategies to strengthen how we assess and address systemic risks—essential for building a safer, more resilient future for people, the planet, and all living ecosystems. The panel included @Marjorie Kaufman Iclei, Tim Lenton, Delilah Rothenberg, and Aishwarya Machani. Todd and Executive Director of ASRA, Ruth Richardson, are also pictured with the Former President of Mongolia @Elbegde Tsakhia and Former President of Mexico @Ernesto Zedillo. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eC4y3N6n    #FacingGlobalRisks #SystemicRisk #Polycrisis #RiskManagement #OurCommonFuture The Meridian team in attendance included Todd Barker, Anna Sophia Roberts, and Sareh Forouzesh.

While I am quite familiar with #gender considerations due to my previous role in implementation of #WPS across the #DOD, it was refreshing to hear emphasis on Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (#TFGBV) at a panel hosted by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with CHAYN on the sidelines of #UNGA79. What a fantastic discussion on the role of policymakers and mainstream media to raise awareness with panelists such as Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman - Grant, filmmaker Manish Rahatkar, Toby Graff of NO MORE who consulted with Justin Baldoni on the new film #itendswithus as well as comments by Mala Kumar whose book “What it Meant to Survive” has just been released. The role of TFGBV is insidious as psychological scars might not bear physical bruises but can still generate immense harm, and creating safety is paramount for the involvement of all genders in online spaces (including careers in tech and #AI inspired by organizations such as Girls Who Code). Survivors deserve to have their stories told and acknowledged, and changed societal attitudes often start through storytelling. I am grateful to work with a team at Meridian Institute that prioritizes justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (#DEI #JEDI) and as the world evolves in the #AI and #tech space, it is crucial that we update our toolbox to transform these challenges.

Our CEO, Todd Barker, shares some reflections from his time at #ClimateWeek2024.

    CEO, Meridian Institute

I left #ClimateWeek2024 feeling energized and optimistic, and before that week becomes a distant memory, I wanted to share some reflections on the unique role Meridian Institute played at events connected to the Summit for the Future and New York Climate Week. Over the course of 11 days, over 20 members of the Meridian team organized, convened, and presented at high-level meetings and small gatherings, formal and informal alike. Across events, Meridian was the connective tissue between diverse groups of stakeholders and topics. We helped participants go deep on a variety of issues while maintaining a systems-level focus. In doing so, we fostered collaboration between individuals and institutions that are often aligned in principle yet disconnected in practice. During my busiest days, I moved between small, off-the-record meetings and high-level public events, including the event I MC’d on behalf of a Meridian-supported project, Accelerator for Systemic Risk Assessment (ASRA), which was attended by over 100 people. Soon after, I was in a much smaller room with other systems-thinkers to “re-imagine economics” under the guidance of Jonathan F.P. Rose who is a well-known affordable housing developer and co-founder of the The Garrison Institute. Each of us had a different approach, but collectively we shared a common goal (a recurring theme in many rooms at Climate Week!). Back to another large meeting the next day, I spent the morning with 30 private foundation leaders who are working to accelerate regenerative agriculture and agroecological approaches around the world. That same afternoon, Meridian supported a meeting with more than 20 funders working on sustainable livestock and consumption.  Over the course of the week, our team also facilitated convenings on blue foods, AI, digital sequencing information (leading up to CBD COP this month), forests, and natural climate solutions, with funders in attendance from the forests, fisheries, and agricultural spaces. As always, Climate Week was a whirlwind of activity that left me feeling invigorated and hopeful. Day after day, I attended events and meetings that touched each of Meridian’s diverse focus areas, and I was reminded just how powerful of a connector Meridian is and will continue to be as we mitigate climate risks and drive sustainable growth.   If you're curious, you can read much more about our week (with lots of wonderful images!) here: https://lnkd.in/gBaJyA_A And I want to hear from you! As we plan for #COP29, I'm curious to hear what caught your attention at Climate Week? What conversations do you hope to continue in November? #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateSolutions #ClimateAtion #ClimatePolicy #Sustainability #SocialImpact

It was great to work with Laurie Ristino, Heather Lair, and Carina Isbell, alongside the Advisory Committee, on this report. Top-level takeaway: TA providers are great, and we need more!

The Technical Assistance Accelerator for Conservation project, an initiative of Meridian Institute, just published a landscape report! This first-of-its-kind report provides a comprehensive view of the US technical assistance for conservation system. It synthesizes existing research and identifies key trends and challenges. Meridian is building upon this analysis with a national-level Advisory Committee that is guiding broad engagement with TA providers and farmers, ranchers, and forest managers. We are also conducting interviews with a broad range of interest holders across regions, production systems, and scales of production. Stay tuned for more insights and recommendations, including a public-facing report by October 2025. Read the report! https://lnkd.in/gfXJJRwi

One of the biggest themes we observed at #ClimateWeek2024 this year was the emphasis on collaboration across sectors—governments, businesses, and communities—to tackle the climate crisis. We were proud to support a range of projects and partnerships that embody this commitment by nurturing inclusivity and building partnerships that drive meaningful change.
