Continuing our Black History Month celebration, today we’re spotlighting one of the “fathers of orthodontics,” Earl Wiley Renfroe! The first Black man to head a department at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry, Renfroe also helped end segregated dentistry. After serving as chief of the Army Air Corps dental service, Renfroe returned to Chicago to resume teaching at UIC and open a practice in The Loop. The World War II veteran also taught in Brazil and Barbados, where the latter named a dental facility after him. UIC’s School of Dentistry honored him with a distinguished alumnus award in 1988. Continuando con nuestra celebración del Mes de la Historia Negra, hoy destacamos a uno de los «padres de la ortodoncia», Earl Wiley Renfroe. Renfroe, el primer negro que dirigió un departamento en la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Illinois Chicago, también contribuyó a acabar con la segregación en la odontología. Tras servir como jefe del servicio dental del Cuerpo Aéreo del Ejército, Renfroe regresó a Chicago para retomar la docencia en la UIC y abrir una consulta en The Loop. Este veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial también enseñó en Brasil y Barbados, donde este último país dio su nombre a una clínica dental. As we begin our Black History Month celebration, we are excited to shine a light on one of Chicago’s most impactful creatives, Dr. Margaret Burroughs! A teacher, poet, activist, and artist, Margaret Burroughs is best known as the founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History. Burroughs grew up in Englewood and attended Englewood High School, Chicago Teachers College, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She went on to teach at DuSable High School for 20 years. In addition to painting, sculpting, and printmaking, she also wrote and illustrated several children’s books. Mayor Harold Washington named Feb. 1, 1986, “Dr. Margaret Burroughs Day,” and she was inducted into the Chicago Women’s Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame in 2015. Profesora, poetisa, activista y artista, Margaret Burroughs es conocida sobre todo por ser la fundadora del Museo DuSable de Historia Afroamericana. Burroughs creció en Englewood y estudió en el Englewood High School, el Chicago Teachers College y el Art Institute of Chicago. Fue profesora del DuSable High School durante 20 años. Originada en China hace más de 4.000 años, esta celebración marca el inicio del calendario lunar y honra tradiciones como las reuniones familiares, el homenaje a los antepasados y la bienvenida a la primavera. Hoy en día, el Año Nuevo Lunar se celebra en todo el este y sudeste de Asia, incluida China, Vietnam (Tết), Corea (Seollal) y otros países. Did you know the Chicago River once flowed in the opposite direction? The city launched a project to reverse its flow, one of the greatest engineering feats in US history. This groundbreaking work was designed to improve sanitation by diverting wastewater away from Lake Michigan, the city's source of clean drinking water, while also creating a vital trade route between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. Once considered impossible, the success of this project inspires us to ask: How can we transform the world with our boldest, most ambitious ideas? First observed in 1950, this Baháʼí Faith Day celebrates the oneness and evolution of religion, highlighting the role all faiths play in uniting humanity. As we enjoy a day off from school, let’s reflect on the beauty of our differences and similarities. How do our beliefs align? What can we learn from one another’s perspectives? We encourage our community to embrace open-mindedness and appreciate the strength that our variety of experiences brings to us all. Observado por primera vez en 1950, este Día de la Fe Baháʼí celebra la unidad y la evolución de la religión, destacando el papel que todas las creencias desempeñan en la unión de la humanidad. Mientras disfrutamos de un día libre en la escuela, reflexionemos sobre la belleza de nuestras diferencias y similitudes. ¿En qué se parecen nuestras creencias? ¿Qué podemos aprender de las perspectivas de los demás? Animamos a nuestra comunidad a adoptar una mentalidad abierta y a apreciar la fuerza que nuestra variedad de experiencias nos aporta a todos.

Today and every day, we honor the profound legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—a man who understood that true change begins with character and education. He challenged us to envision a world of justice and equality, urging us to fight for freedom with courage and conviction. Above all, he taught us that love is the most powerful act of resistance. At Meridian, we continue to carry Dr. King’s vision forward, embracing his values of inclusivity, justice, and service in all that we do. Hoy y todos los días honramos el profundo legado del Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., un hombre que comprendió que el verdadero cambio empieza por el carácter y la educación. Nos desafió a imaginar un mundo de justicia e igualdad, instándonos a luchar por la libertad con valentía y convicción. Por encima de todo, nos enseñó que el amor es el acto de resistencia más poderoso. Meridian campuses will be closed on Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and on Tuesday for a professional development day. We’ll see you back in class on Wednesday! January is National Thank You Month—a wonderful sentiment to carry as we start the new year. A simple “Thank you” can go a long way in showing others you value and appreciate them. This January, let’s focus on gratitude, kindness, and appreciation. Enero es el Mes Nacional del Agradecimiento, un sentimiento maravilloso con el que comenzar el nuevo año.
