About us

Meritas was founded by two Wall Street veterans, Gabriel Chenard-Poirier and Neil Datta. For the last decade, Neil and Gabriel have invested billions of dollars with the best performing equity hedge funds in the world. They wanted to create a community of investors that participate in the equity markets without risk. Through our app, our community members can access the Meritas ecosystem to manage their own portfolio, test their skills and compete for cash and jobs…a true meritocracy. We think the equity markets should be transparent and accessible to all, even if you don’t live in a big city or have a perfect resume. That’s Meritas. Built by real investors, the Meritas platform simulates the experience of working at a fast-paced hedge fund on your mobile device. Research and track companies that you care about, put them in your portfolio or add them to your watchlist. Our system makes it super simple and guides you along the way. Once your portfolio is live, the Meritas algorithm will generate a custom score for you. Community members can participate in competitions and apply for jobs directly on the platform!

    Meritas helps financial professionals find highly skilled junior talents! As an investor, I know that finding a good portfolio manager, research assistant, or analyst is a challenge because there is no effective way to do it! If you need to fill a role in your firm, you hire a recruiter who will source a bunch of resumes for you.  You’ll have to make your pick and pray that the hire will add value to your firm because there’s very little correlation between a resume and actual world performance. So we have created an investment and finance training system, similar to what the NCAA does for professional sports, which stimulates the experience of managing hedge funds and investments in a team, and maintains candidates' performance records. That is more telling and valuable for a recruiter than a resume. Meritas also has an ecosystem where people can apply for jobs with their ideas and talents, ultimately leading to better outcomes for recruiters seeking specific skill sets. For example, suppose you’re a healthcare hedge fund seeking people who have talent in your investable universe. In that case, you can look through our database and find specifically equipped skills for your industry.     Here’s the biggest challenge with crypto investing: Instant transactions.   It still takes about a day or two to settle a securities transaction. So, the cryptocurrency space and Web3 are particularly attractive to younger people. The problem is that many of them have significant portions in cryptocurrency. They don’t research and diversify their investments, which is key to maintaining and building wealth. Apart from that, the transactions in the crypto industry are irreversible. So, crypto is easier to steal as compared to stocks.   The industry is suffering scams similar to the ones happening with penny stocks years ago. That’s why, investors should be a little nervous with the fast-moving nature of crypto investing. What’s your take on this? #investing #crypto #cryptoinvesting

    I always wanted some sort of AI notetaker as an investor. Let me explain: If I am on a private Zoom call with a client, it’s tough to think and take good notes simultaneously. But that’s important so I am not wasting their time asking them the same questions the second and third time I meet them. So to free me from the notetaking aspect, it’d be helpful to have an AI-based notetaker that can effectively transcribe the conversation in real-time like a court reporter. That will help me have a good recollection of the discussion while helping me maintain the needed privacy. And I can focus on having thoughtful conversations and building good relationships with them. That’s essential in finance because it’s a people business. What’s your take on this?     Financial services is a relationship business. But how do you build good relationships with your colleagues and clients?  Follow these 2 steps: 1) Take notes: When you meet someone who’s a couple of years ahead of you in the industry or works in a firm you’d like to join, ask them questions about their experience, and how they got into the industry and takes notes! It might seem like a silly thing but it's super helpful in a career setting. Note-taking will help you remember what you have already said to someone, so you can pick up the conversation from where you left it off. 2) Follow-up: From the standpoint of a hiring manager, I really appreciate when people are thoughtful and follow through with what they said they’d do. If you say you’ll follow up within a week, do it. These conversations tend to stand out.     It’s no secret that Wall Street and financial services have problems with diversity, gender equality, and fair pay.  If you look Uk’s gender pay gap report, particularly for financial services, the numbers are staggering. Women are paid anywhere from 20 to 10 cents on the dollar for what men are paid. Not to pick on any particular bank, but the largest and most well-known banks typically have the worst problem. And we built Meritas to specifically address that problem by creating an equal recruiting platform. It nullifies all the metrics recruiters use to pigeonhole people: university degrees, who you know, and what club you belong to. The platform allows you to create a record of ideas – a proof statement – which signifies you know how to research and invest. So we allow women and people of color who have historically been disadvantaged in financial services an apple-to-apples way to access opportunities in the industry purely through their merit, not bias. #genderbias #finance #financialservices #financialedudation #investment

    It’s tough to get your foot on Wall Street even if you have a perfect resume and know the right people.   Otherwise, it’s almost impossible. So, Meritas can’t guarantee you success on Wall Street but gives you software and opportunities so you can build practical knowledge skills like: - how to work in the industry, - how to manage a portfolio,  - how to take risk manager positions, and - how to choose research and manage your own portfolio. These soft skills are very valuable to employers, so we’ve built Meritas to help candidates develop those skills and stay above their competition.   So, for example, If I am looking at a candidate with a great resume but no experience and another candidate who hasn’t gone to the best schools but has practical knowledge, I will always choose the latter. #finance #investment #financialeducation #riskmanagement
