Because Metalcraft is committed to meeting and exceeding all industry-related compliance requirements, we’re proud to announce that we’re on track to earn our Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), a new qualification and compliance standard authorized by the Department of Defense in Q1 of 2025. CMMC goes into effect in 2025 and Metalcraft Industries is ready to meet and exceed this updated cybersecurity standard for all of the manufacturing project work we manage for the DoD. • Manufacturers are finding valuable solutions to production line, quality, logistic and inventory management issues in their product realization life cycles using computer vision. Computer vision is a branch of artificial intelligence that employs neural networks and machine learning to teach manufacturing systems to extract relevant information from various forms of visual inputs to extract more efficient procedures to utilize. Champions of this developing technology claim that unlike LLMs like Chat GPT, their work and accomplishments with computer vision technology is further along in its development cycle which will give users quicker and more usable benefits, qualities that the average AI shopper is hoping to find. Cybersecurity is, and should be, at the top of many to-do lists today, fueling an effort to maintain uninterrupted control of a company’s or administrative body’s digital management tools. However our nation’s and ally’s collective threat landscape is widening while the cyber threats themselves are becoming more sophisticated. Cyber criminals have learned that the structure of the many industries that make up a country’s economy can be understood and exploited by comprehending that industry’s supply chains. An attack on one link will affect all the links. Threat actors have learned that among the industry types vulnerable to their bad acts are software supply chains. These chains are made up of contributors that all use the common pieces of software applications known as solution stacks, which are software subsystems, tools and components that make up the infrastructure of their applications. A reason that they are so vulnerable is that these components and tools are largely open source so an attack on one component effectively disables that subsystem all along the chain. The frequency of these attacks has increased by hundreds of percentage points per year in the past few years. • The term supply chain is well used in today’s manufacturing world and can be defined as a collection of commodity and service providers that supply and distribute products to customers. The real value of that chain is whether the members in it can fulfill their obligations to their customers, because each member is a link with obligations. The old saw about “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link” is admirably accurate. When we consider the value of AI in today’s industry 4.0 objectives we can consider whether there are ways to strengthen the links of our chain by dissecting the minute places where chain-member interactions falter, places that can be aided by AI’s ability to automatically monitor weak points in the communication and accuracy of data that fuels the process of buy and sell within the chain. • Manufacturers have a daunting list of duties and responsibilities when the subject at hand is achieving industry 4.0. Digitalization is, when fully considered, a massive undertaking, including decisions on investing, how and where to begin, how to gather disparate pieces of physical infrastructure together with types and silos of legacy data, aging and retiring human capital and let’s not ignore the day to day management of a living breathing corporation. Actually achieving this Industry 4.0 goal will likely come down to choosing and implementing the proper and capable services of industry SMEs (subject matter experts) to help pave the way to the successful choice of events that will make it all happen. Expert help can be expensive but when the goal is to find the shortest, most effective, journey to the finish line, finding someone who’s already been there can be a wise choice. • Manufacturers, at least in a free market environment, have a list of things to predict and monitor when it comes to profitability, like the producer of a machine bolt needs to consider. There are things like machine costs, material costs, labor, both production and quality and perhaps finishing or special packaging costs. Now that the pandemic is behind us (but not its lingering effects) it would be advantageous to include a few more KPIs (key performance indicators) to our list of concerns. The frequency or regularity that an enterprise’s inventory turns over has major cost implications. Along with turnover is the burden of identifying obsolete inventory. Both items tie up dollars badly needed to obtain and maintain a manufacturer’s technological edge. Third on a list that is present and growing in our enhanced high tech factory environment is maintenance. Maintaining the upkeep and operational capability of our increasingly complex machinery cannot be ignored and must be included to achieve accurate budget control.
