🌍 Research has linked the rising wildfire risks in the Western US to human-induced climate change, primarily due to increased greenhouse gas emissions.  🔥 This warming effect has intensified the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), a measure of the atmosphere's drying power, with human activities responsible for about two-thirds of this increase. The elevated VPD results in drier, more flammable vegetation, leading to more frequent and intense wildfires. 🌫️ Wildfire smoke significantly, releasing harmful pollutants such as fine particulate matter (generally <300 nm and carbon-based), and elevated levels of formaldehyde and ozone, impacts indoor air quality. As we navigate through 2024, the impact of wildfire smoke on public health has reached unprecedented levels. In 2023 alone, the average person in the U.S. has breathed in more harmful wildfire smoke than in any year since 2006, underscoring a troubling trend. Fine particles from wildfire smoke (generally <300 nm and carbon-based) infiltrate buildings and homes more successfully than larger PM (e.g. pollen, dust) and pose significant health concerns, with studies showing a staggering 27-fold increase in smoke exposure over the last decade. This surge isn't confined to the U.S. West alone; in 2023, fires raging across Canada blanketed most of the contiguous U.S., affecting air quality in regions far from the flames. The health implications are profound. From exacerbating asthma and heart diseases to causing respiratory emergencies, wildfire smoke contributes to premature deaths and causes significant dangers to vulnerable populations, including the elderly, pregnant individuals, children, and those with chronic illnesses. Despite efforts to improve outdoor air quality, the spread of wildfire smoke has stalled progress in many states, with some even experiencing reversals in air quality gains made over decades. This setback is particularly acute in California, Oregon, and Washington, where local fires and those from neighboring Canada converge to worsen conditions. In our warming climate, the frequency and intensity of fire weather continue to rise, creating conditions ripe for more frequent and severe wildfires. The implications for air quality and public health are stark, demanding urgent action to mitigate the impact of these environmental hazards. The U.S. wildfire season has burned more than 4.4 million acres, up a staggering 278% from last year, the National Interagency Fire Center reported Thursday. This is concerning for air quality–the air we breathe is more polluted than ever, leading to serious health issues. Seattle recently faced air quality challenges due to wildfire smoke from both local and distant fires. The Puget Sound region experienced moderate to poor air quality, prompting residents, especially sensitive groups, to limit outdoor activities. This situation was caused by weakened offshore winds carrying smoke into western Washington. Seattle's air quality has since improved to a moderate level (https://lnkd.in/gipAfKZ6) due to favorable wind patterns. However, many areas in Washington and Oregon continue to suffer from poor air quality due to ongoing wildfires. These events accentuate the broader implications of climate change. The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires are direct consequences of a warming planet.
