According to the American Diabetes Association, over 2.7 million Texans suffer from diabetes. With such a high prevalence rate at 16%, San Antonio is four points higher than the national average. We're incredibly proud to have sponsored the American Diabetes Association's Step Out Walk - an event that recently returned to the Alamo City which brings people together under the common goal of ending diabetes and providing services and treatment for those in our community. Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc.'s President & CEO, Jaime Wesolowski, along with Jordan Ghawi, MPA, MBA & Dr. Vasan Ramachandran, share an insightful OpEd in the San Antonio Report on how our well-being depends on more than just access to health care. "Life in a community with little access to health-enhancing vital resources requires more than traditional health care services. We need to broaden how we define 'health care,' but it requires a shift in thinking and action." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eNzeS_xz

Sandra Moreno is a familiar face at MHM, she is a Case Manager II, a team captain for the annual Refresh Campaign - she is also a breast cancer survivor. Moreno is not alone, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, before the end of 2024, more than 300,000 women will likely receive a breast cancer diagnosis. As part of #BreastCancerAwarnessMonth, Moreno reflects on the journey that led her to discover newfound strength and faith. She also shares a message of hope for others, "They can fight and they can come out stronger.” Click here for the full story: https://bit.ly/3Yy4qCR

Last week, Chief Operating Officer Xochy Hurtado led a group of MHM team members to the Coastal Bend area. They traveled to the communities of Alice and Kingsville, where they met with Wesley Nurses Amy Gunn and Sandra Seymore, and MHM Behavioral Health Counselor, Laurie Perez. The group learned about the unique challenges that exist in each of the communities, such diabetes, mental health, and access to hygiene products. However, regional staff have forged partnerships with local organizations which help to further MHM’s mission in “Serving humanity to honor God”. Thank you to Faith on First, Weavers of Love, and First United Methodist Church of Kingsville for taking time to share their stories of impact with our team.
