As I wrap up my final night in Pittsburgh for the #ICMAConference2024, I'm feeling energized and inspired! As a former borough manager now helping many local communities, I'm amazed by the confluence of ideas from thousands of local government professionals gathered here. Key highlights that have resonated throughout the conference: 1. Cutting-edge innovations in local government, especially the fascinating use of AI in city management 2. Insightful discussions on fostering positive workplace culture 3. Strategies for building strong relationships with elected officials 4. Valuable networking with familiar and new PA managers The conference is buzzing with cutting-edge ideas that bridge theory and practice. I'm looking forward to applying these insights to my work at the Meyner Center at Lafayette College. It's been particularly inspiring to meet Lafayette alumnus Mike Baumwoll ‘09 showcasing Rep'd, an innovative platform revolutionizing constituent engagement. This blend of technology and public service exemplifies the exciting directions our field is taking. A personal highlight has been exploring Pittsburgh with Luis E. Campos, ICMA-CM Easton's City Administrator. Our impromptu discussions on collaboration reinforce the value of connections made outside formal sessions – often where the best ideas emerge! I'm appreciative of Patrick Ibarra’s trailblazing work and thought leadership. His early emphasis on organizational culture and succession planning continues to shape the landscape of local government management. The scale and seamless execution of the conference have been mind-blowing – a testament to the organizers' expertise in large-scale event management. It's a vivid reminder of the complex orchestration required in effective city management, showcasing the very skills we discuss and develop in our field. I'm thankful for the opportunity to engage in professional development that spans the academic and practical realms of governance. This intersection is where we can truly improve governance and public administration. As I prepare to head back to the Meyner Center with a renewed perspective, I'm excited to contribute to more effective, efficient, and innovative approaches in local government. The future of public service is bright, filled with opportunities for fresh thinking and impactful careers. Oh and there were puppies at Pawsativity Park, a feel good relaxation stop. Here's to applying these insights and continuing to grow in our shared mission of excellent public service! #LocalGovernment #PublicAdministration #HigherEd #ICMA2024 #LafayetteCollege #Innovation
