The Biden administration’s proposal to reclassify marijuana elicited nearly 43,000 public comments before the deadline, and the vast majority expressed support. In fact, most commenters said marijuana should be removed from the CSA completely instead of just being rescheduled. According to one report from industry analytics firm Headset, approximately 35 percent of comments submitted to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) by Monday’s deadline agreed with the Biden administration plan for marijuana to be rescheduled. But most—57 percent—said cannabis should be entirely descheduled. The group said turnout during the public comment period, which began in May and ended on Monday, “has shattered previous DEA records, surpassing even the highly contentious 2020 telemedicine rules that garnered approximately 38,000 comments.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-pUPSQY

More than 3 in 4 New York State medical marijuana patients say cannabis has allowed them to reduce their intake of prescription drugs, according to a new report from the state’s Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). That includes 2 in 3 (66 percent) who report that marijuana has specifically “reduced their need for prescription opioids for pain reduction.” The report concludes that participants are generally satisfied with how things have been going. Among patients, 79 percent said they intended to renew their certifications after they expire, while 86 percent said they’d recommend New York’s medical cannabis program to a friend or family member. Summer time in #northern Michigan hard to beat. Just ask Kid Rock. If anyone knows of good dispensaries or facilities to tour near Traverse City please let me know. (Brandon Byrne, CFA, Jamie Cooper, Nathan Russell, Brady Madden, Chase Horsburgh, Willie McKenzie, Will Bowden,) I'll be visiting Traverse City MI next month for the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association Annual Conference and Chronic Cup Championship. Robin Schneider and her team do a great job with this event. I look forward to it every year. Good to see some familiar faces and meet new operators in the #cannabis industry there. The MI market has it's issues but they are still putting up some of the highest #revenue $ of any market in the USA. MI is home to some very experienced operators and sophisticated facilities. So even with price compression being experienced they are able to run a profitable businesses for their investors and lenders. Joel R. Mueller, CMA and myself will be at the vineyard and hitting the links. We are actively looking for clients and team members in the MI market. So say hello if you see us out. Specifically looking to speak with more CFO and finance professionals this year. photo credit = last years event at the start of the scramble. This is what the cannabis industry looks like somedays. Most days are boring and routine in business. So always good to enjoy the fun unique days when they come.

Though sales have slowed over past months, Michigan has had the second most cannabis sales in the first half of 2024. California continues to be the state to beat, having racked up more than $2 billion in legal cannabis sales during the first half of 2024. Comparatively, Michigan recorded $1.6 billion in legal cannabis sales in the same time period. While California may dominate the total legal sales category, Michigan far outstrips it on a per capita basis. In the first six months, California only registered a per capita sales for its 21+ population of $74.90; Michigan, on the other hand, reported a per capita figure of $233.97 for the same cohort. U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan) introduced legislation to limit federal agencies from using past consumption of marijuana as a factor in hiring or achieving security clearances. The bill is called the Dismantling Outdated Obstacles and Barriers to Individual Employment Act of 2024 - The DOOBIE Act. The proposed legislation states that agencies “may not base a suitability determination with respect to an individual solely on the past use of marijuana by the individual.” The bill would also require the Director of National Intelligence to update policies around cannabis and assist other federal agencies in enacting hiring and security clearance protocols that ignore past marijuana consumption as a factor. A new report sheds light on the effects of federal drug prohibition on immigrants to the United States, showing that thousands of people are deported annually for drug offenses “that in many cases no longer exist under state laws." The report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) found that between 2002 - 2020, half a million people whose most serious offense was a drug charge were expelled from the U.S. Of those, the analysis shows that at least 156,000 peoples’ most serious charges was for simple drug use or possession, including more than 47,000 people for marijuana use or possession. A new analysis of violence between intimate partners concludes that legalizing marijuana for adult use “results in a substantial decrease in rates of intimate partner violence.” The finding also indicate that recreational cannabis legalization “substantially impacts the relationship between heavy drinking” and intimate partner violence (IPV), possibly as the result of people substituting marijuana for alcohol. The analysis found that “legalization of recreational marijuana results in 56.6 fewer reported incidents of IPV per 100,000 people.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYYwFhzt

The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Cannabis Quality Assurance Program (CannaQAP) released a report which focuses on determining cannabinoid content in plant material samples, following earlier reports on moisture content and certain toxins and heavy metals. This new report is part of a project designed to help testing laboratories ensure accuracy and precision in testing cannabis products. Among the top-level findings was the importance of calibration. Testing was most reliable when the level of a substance being tested for fell near the middle of the calibration curve; lower levels were less accurate, while higher amounts required dilution.
