Facilitating, dreaming, reimagining how we govern

👁 When I envision a brighter future... ...I imagine towns and cities filled with homes that are created and stewarded by community members. In this future, housing is a public good rather than a tool for profit. 🏡 🏢 ☀ ~ Recently, I got to experience this vision in action: I was invited by uxo architects (Ashton Hamm / Alice Armstrong, RA) to engage community members as co-designers for two new affordable housing projects that will be managed by a community land trust in San Ysidro, California. These projects aim to build community resilience, combat displacement, and celebrate the rich culture of this Southern border city. ~ When the community is the developer, we can explore dynamic questions around our shared values and our evolving relationship with land, home, and each other. In this project, we considered... 🎨 How do we express ourselves and our culture in our homes? 🚲 What is the right balance between personal space and community connection? What elements of our homes are we excited to share with our neighbors – porches, gardens, communal kitchens and gathering spaces, tools, playgrounds, bikes and other forms of transportation? 🌿 Where can we find inspiration as we build? What can we learn from the beautiful trees that have been shading the neighborhood for decades? 📣 GOT THOUGHTS? I'm curious to hear your answers to these questions in the comments below! ~ Hungry for more? ➕ Learn about uxo's approach as a worker-owned architecture practice and the project in San Ysidro: https://lnkd.in/gM72GAmf ➕ Get to know the history and impact of community land trusts as a tool for decommodifying housing in America: https://lnkd.in/gNTupbjw ➕ Chat with me about participatory processes for building community power and collective ownership... Seriously, let's connect if this topic excites you! A highlight of starting my own practice (Mickelson Facilitation) is getting to contribute to and learn from projects like this. Please reach out if you have ideas, questions, or opportunities to collaborate!
