What an incredible harvest season for Carson City Correctional Facility! Thanks to the hard work of 10 prisoners and CPC Joy Walthorn, more than 1,000 pounds of fresh vegetables were donated to the Beacon of Hope Family Care Center and distributed to low-income senior citizens and local families in need of assistance obtaining food. After each distribution to community members, the Director of Beacon of Hope Family Care Center personally thanks the gardeners with a note sharing how they’ve made a difference, which they look forward to reading each week. We want to express our deep gratitude to DRF Corrections Program Coordinator and Garden Supervisor Joy Walthorn for her unwavering support of this program. We are also incredibly thankful for the prisoners who make this program a success through their time and dedication. This program is only possible with them. We’re already looking forward to what they harvest next year! #Gardening #FreshProduce #PrisonerGardeners #PrisonGardens #MakeADifference #SupportingCommunities #HelpingOthers #GivingBack

Today, we remember Officer Earl DeMarse, who, on this day in 1973, became the first corrections officer to be murdered at a Michigan institution. DeMarse, who had been an employee with the department for 26 years, was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital after being stabbed while he worked in the auditorium at Marquette Branch Prison. An inmate was later convicted in DeMarse's death and is serving a life sentence. This prisoner had been serving for felonious assault, arson, car theft, and burglary. The department named its training academy after DeMarse. We honor his memory and his service. To learn more about his heroic story, visit https://lnkd.in/gVZdfuXb. #FallenEmployee #NeverForgotten
