  • Identifying Fraudulent Employment Opportunities Unfortunately, not every job posting or offer is an opportunity. Scammers know that job opportunities are a powerful tool for gathering personal information, so you need to know how to distinguish legitimate job postings from scam attempts. Below are some tips to follow and red flags to look out for. BASIC TIPS: *If a job sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. *Don’t provide financial information or your Social Security number! *Legitimate employers won’t ask for your bank account details or your SSN. *Do not send money! Legitimate employers will not ask you to wire money or pay for services. *When in doubt, look for the job posting on the employer’s official website. Much like phishing emails, scam job postings often capitalize on well-known names and images. Do not follow links from the suspicious posting, which could take you to a cosmetically similar page, and check the employment page to be sure the opening is real. Calling the company in question (again, using publicly available contact information) is another good strategy. *If you experience anything unusual about a job posting in Handshake, please contact CCI as soon as possible and flag the posting in Handshake. RED FLAGS: *The same warning signs that signal fraudulent emails and websites: bad grammar and spelling, requests for personal information, and difficulty contacting or identifying the poster are all clear signs of trouble. *Request for an initial investment. *Request for bank account access. *Requests for payment or transferring money. *Offers to pay a large amount of money for little work. *Offers you a job without interviewing/interacting with you. *You are contacted by phone, and the number is not available. *Vague descriptions that focus on money rather than the job. *Email domain that doesn’t match the employer’s official domain. *Email domain of a free provider is used such as live(dot)com, yahoo(dot)com, hotmail(dot)com, gmail(dot)com etc. Legitimate organizations almost always have their own email systems. *Website that has information only on the job you’re applying for, rather than about the company in general. In 2019, I was one of 10 fortunate Middlebury College students (class of ‘21) selected for an Innovation Trek to Silicon Valley, organized by the amazing Ursula Olender, Ben Powers, and the team at Middlebury College Center for Careers and Internships. The trek connected us with alumni in the Bay Area and exposed us to exciting career opportunities in tech. During the trek, I was paired with Mariette Wharton (class of ‘91), who shares my passion for design thinking and social entrepreneurship. After sharing my experiences in Ethiopia and South Africa and learning about her inspiring work with NIMBLE Mindset, we knew we had to collaborate. Shortly after the trek, while attending Middlebury Language Schools (where I pledged to speak only French), Mariette and I planned our first design thinking workshop in Ethiopia—all in French to honor my pledge! Since then, we've expanded our impact with projects in Morocco, Kenya, and beyond, focusing on empowering women and girls. This week, I'm excited to return to Silicon Valley for NIMBLE’s Innovative Women in Business Gala, where we’ll be generating excitement for future initiatives. The event features networking (with premier Napa wine and buffet dinner) and 3 lightning panels with industry luminaries: Impact of AI and How Leadership Should Respond, featuring:  - Lorie Boyd, Chief People Officer at Turo - Beth Kanter, a legendary social enterprise leader and AI expert - Lucy Mangas, a Global VP at Hitachi Digital VC Funding + Alternatives for Women Founders, featuring: - Monique Maddy, ex-Apple micro payments expert who built a digital wallet platform in Mexico - VCs Tess Robinson and Maria Pienaar - Johanna Mahal of Opportunity International - Iris Sagi of FINCA International Product and Industry Disruption, featuring: - Courtney Presto, CEO of first crypto-based media platform - Michele Boal, CEO of innovative footwear company Kadima - Ashley Zehnder, CEO of Fauna Bio - Cynthia Leung, founder of a disruptive solar company If you're in the Bay Area, I’d love to see you there! Fellow Midd alums can use the code "MIDD" for a discounted ticket. Don’t miss this chance to connect, support innovative women, and create even greater impact!
