Identifying Fraudulent Employment Opportunities Unfortunately, not every job posting or offer is an opportunity. Scammers know that job opportunities are a powerful tool for gathering personal information, so you need to know how to distinguish legitimate job postings from scam attempts. Below are some tips to follow and red flags to look out for. BASIC TIPS: *If a job sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. *Don’t provide financial information or your Social Security number! *Legitimate employers won’t ask for your bank account details or your SSN. *Do not send money! Legitimate employers will not ask you to wire money or pay for services. *When in doubt, look for the job posting on the employer’s official website. Much like phishing emails, scam job postings often capitalize on well-known names and images. Do not follow links from the suspicious posting, which could take you to a cosmetically similar page, and check the employment page to be sure the opening is real. Calling the company in question (again, using publicly available contact information) is another good strategy. *If you experience anything unusual about a job posting in Handshake, please contact CCI as soon as possible and flag the posting in Handshake. RED FLAGS: *The same warning signs that signal fraudulent emails and websites: bad grammar and spelling, requests for personal information, and difficulty contacting or identifying the poster are all clear signs of trouble. *Request for an initial investment. *Request for bank account access. *Requests for payment or transferring money. *Offers to pay a large amount of money for little work. *Offers you a job without interviewing/interacting with you. *You are contacted by phone, and the number is not available. *Vague descriptions that focus on money rather than the job. *Email domain that doesn’t match the employer’s official domain. *Email domain of a free provider is used such as live(dot)com, yahoo(dot)com, hotmail(dot)com, gmail(dot)com etc. Legitimate organizations almost always have their own email systems. *Website that has information only on the job you’re applying for, rather than about the company in general. Internship Spotlight: Kate Vasquez, Class of 2026 This summer, Kate is a Yale SURF Scholar at the GSAS Department of Neuroscience, working in the Chandra Lab. Her research focuses on presynaptic proteins and their role in synucleinopathies like Parkinson’s Disease. Kate discovered her interest in hands-on research and thrived in this immersive experience. Kate's mentors have played a key role in her journey, guiding her through writing research proposals, progress reports, and personal statements for graduate school applications. She even presented her findings at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium and achieved significant results that may be included in future scientific publications! Through this internship, Kate says she has developed both personally and professionally. She has gained confidence in her abilities, learned advanced lab techniques, and strengthened her networking skills. Kate's advice to future interns is to "fully embrace your internship experience, learn from everyone, and explore all opportunities." Internship Spotlight: Aris Xanthoudakis We are pleased to introduce Aris Xanthoudakis, (currently undeclared, but plans to major in Physics and Chemistry), from the Class of 2027. This summer, Aris is gaining valuable experience as a Sailmaker Assistant at J-Sails in Preveza, Greece. His role involves learning the detailed process of sail design and production, a unique opportunity to enhance his skill set while reconnecting with his Greek heritage. Aris reflects, "The complexity of sailmaking really surprised me. There are numerous types of sails and techniques, some of which are centuries old. A 'beginner's mindset' has been crucial for my success, and I’m especially proud of mastering the sewing process, which is quite challenging." Beyond sail making, Aris is also expanding his knowledge of the business world through mentorship and client interactions. His advice for future interns? "Don’t hesitate to ask questions and maintain clear communication with your team, especially during project planning." #MiddleburySummerInternship #SummerInternship2024 #MiddCCI #ShareYourStory #InternshipJourney #StudentSpotlight #CareerSuccess #InternshipExperience #SummerInternships

Congratulations to our colleague Amy McGlashan on her work creating the MiddWorks for Vermont Summer Internship Program with our former Executive Director, Peggy Burns. Wonderful to see their work highlighted in Seven Days! "Three years ago, Middlebury College created a summer internship program, MiddWorks for Vermont, that places 25 students in local enterprises that are working to improve this state, the one in which they are studying. You can spend four years in Vermont, in an ivory tower, and never really get to know the place. The greater hope is that some of these young adults will decide to stick around, as I — and many of my friends — did." https://lnkd.in/ehEf-9YS

🚀 Internship Spotlight: Jacob Zhang 🚀 We are excited to spotlight Jacob Zhang, a Computer Science major with a Math minor from the Class of 2026. Jacob is spending his summer as a Software Development Intern at Maitsys, focusing on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects. Jacob reflects on his experience: "The amount you learn during an internship and how many new technologies you're exposed to is surprising. My experiences in MiddDev and computer science courses prepared me for this work. I am most proud of developing an entire product from scratch myself." Through this internship, Jacob is developing personally by improving his communication skills and learning to tackle new challenges independently. Professionally, he’s gaining experience with popular technologies and frameworks used in the industry. His advice for future interns? "Ask a lot of questions as no one expects you to know everything on day one." #MiddleburySummerInternship #SummerInternship2024 #MiddCCI #ShareYourStory #InternshipJourney #StudentSpotlight #CareerSuccess #InternshipExperience #SummerInternships
