𝘋𝘪𝘥 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸?💡 Butterflies taste with their feet. Butterflies don’t have tongues, they have a proboscis which many people think of as a tongue but it’s more like having your mouth extended into a long tube. They do have some taste buds on their proboscis and some on their antennae as well, but most of the taste buds are focused on their feet. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 The proverbial “sugar high” that follows the ingestion of a sweet treat is a familiar example of the potentially positive effects of food on mood. On the flip side, feeling “hangry” – the phenomenon where hunger manifests in the form of anger or irritability – illustrates how what we eat, or don’t eat, can also provoke negative emotions. The latest research suggests that blood sugar fluctuations are partly responsible for the connection between what we eat and how we feel. Through its effects on our hormones and our nervous system, blood sugar levels can be fuel for anxiety and depression. Mental health is complex. There are countless social, psychological and biological factors that ultimately determine any one person’s experience. However, numerous randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that diet is one biological factor that can significantly influence risk for symptoms of depression and anxiety, especially in women. To stop microplastics and nanoplastics from penetrating deep into our bodies and brains, researchers at the University of Missouri have come up with a potentially sustainable and safe way to rid water of microscopic pollutants. Using natural liquid ingredients that have low toxicity, the team has shown they can remove around 98 percent of nanoscopic polystyrene beads from fresh and salt water. ✨ 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ✨ 𝘌𝘴𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘓𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨, 𝘔.𝘚., 𝘗𝘩.𝘋. (𝘋𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 18, 1922 - 𝘕𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 11, 2006) Anyone who has dipped a toe into the study of bacterial genetics has encountered the work of Esther Lederberg, M.S., Ph.D., even if they are not aware of it. Her discoveries were central to understanding bacterial gene regulation, recombination and exchange—though you may have a hard time finding a textbook that acknowledges this. This lack of awareness and recognition is as much a part of Lederberg’s legacy as her scientific contributions. For much of her career, she was snubbed from receiving the professional recognition bestowed upon men whose achievements were intermixed with her own. Nevertheless, through the work of those who knew Lederberg—and those who are just uncovering her story—her legacy is being brought out of the shadows. 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 🍌 The bright bananas dotting your fruit bowl are in some serious trouble. A popular type of banana is facing extinction from a fungal pathogen. The disease Fusarium wilt of banana (FWB) blocks the flow of nutrients to the fruit and makes it wilt. During the 1950s, the pathogen wiped out commercial banana crops and made one species–Gros Michel bananas–functionally extinct. But not all is lost for this colorful fruit. New research from an international team of scientists has pinpointed the molecular mechanisms behind the microbe that destroys bananas and it opens the door to new treatments and strategies against the pathogen. The findings are detailed in a study published August 16 in the journal Nature Microbiology. 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦: 𝘍𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘢’𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭.
