What if the key to saving a child's life isn't about having all the answers, but about truly listening to their unspoken pain? Imagine the difference we could make by simply being present, attentive, and empathetic, providing a safe space where they feel heard and understood. In a world where youth suicide rates are through the roof, this shift in perspective could be the lifeline our children desperately need. “If a person is determined to die by suicide nothing can be done to change their mind.” This statement is false. Even the most severely depressed adolescents can question whether they want to live or die. Truthfully, most suicidal adolescents do not want to die, they want to find a way to end their pain. They don’t have the tools to find a way out of the darkness; listening and letting them know they are not alone, as well as getting them professional help, are the best ways to keep them alive. When Stacy meets adolescents who are assessed as high suicide risks or those who have attempted to take their own lives, the first thing she asks is for them to teach her what it’s like to live their lives. In 2022, nearly 20% of high school students reported serious thoughts of suicide and 9% had made an attempt to take their lives (National Alliance on Mental Illness). We must take action and learn to listen before it’s too late. In her latest book, Stacy gives us an inside look into the lives of children living with suicidal thoughts, provides a wealth of insight, and teaches us how to dance in the gray. Suicide among adolescents is more prevalent than ever, but no one wants to speak about it. As a parent or guardian, it’s imperative that you learn not only how to effectively listen to your child, but also be hyperaware of the warning signs surrounding teenage suicide. Common signs include- 1. Withdrawing from their normal activities 2. Isolating and spending more time alone 3. Loss of appetite, and abnormal sleep patterns 4. Acting out at school, or at home 5. Frequent changes in mood By educating ourselves, we can decrease the rate of suicide. In all of her years as a treatment provider, Stacy has never met a child who talked about suicide because they wanted attention. She almost always knew it to be because of the intense pain that was engulfing their lives. It's a feeling that often leads to hopelessness. In her latest book, “Dancing in the Gray, How to Listen and Support Suicidal Kids”, Stacy gives us an inside look into the lives of children coping with suicidal thoughts, the psychological reasoning behind these thoughts, and most importantly, how to listen.
