I often get asked "What are some examples of awesome social media content?" when I talk about what I feel mining / geosciences should look like on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. I'm creating a list - don't worry! Work in progress... 😅 But, I have been LOVING the recent Fieldwork series by Charlotte Spruzen and wanted to share it as an example! ⚒ I also have been living vicariously through her content as I sit behind my desk this month. The mining industry, and social media as a whole, tends to slow down for the summer. This makes it the perfect time to revamp and optimize your social media presence! So here's a not-so-gentle reminder: it's time to double-check your social media icons. Are they: ⚒ Actually there? (In a recent study by MineLife Media, 16% of the mining industry didn't have their social media on their website!) ⚒ Visible? (Use contrasting colors, and don't hide them in the footer) ⚒ Working correctly? (PLEASE make sure you actually insert YOUR social media with them, otherwise they often lead to your website provider social media, like Wix or Wordpress) You'd be surprised how many companies miss these simple steps! Remember, your website is often the first stop for potential clients or investors. Make it easy for them to connect with you on social platforms! I don't generally post my full-length videos here on LinkedIn, but you HAVE to see this one! (It's only 5.5 minutes, but you can skip to the last minute if you really want to.) As an industry, we are always talking about how we communicate with the public and how we better explain what we do. But- are we really utilizing technology, social media, and our surroundings to their full potential? As I was on vacation last month, I had the immense pleasure of traveling through southeast Alaska. What a STUNNING state (any Alaska mines hiring? 👋🤣). But what was this visit missing? More talk about mining! I had to search DEEP to learn about Alaska's wonderful mining history and current operations, even with the historic Klondike Gold Rush and Juneau's local mines. Luckily for me, I found a way to dig deeper into the mining history here, in a way that I have NEVER seen before - augmented reality! You can watch the full video to learn more, but what I'd really like to encourage you to do is use it as inspiration to think outside the box when it comes to communication within both your local community and visitors. I've been filming the latest Rock Records - any guesses what they're about? 👀 In other words, I apologize that I've been a bit hard to reach this week! Internet connectivity has been a bit hit or miss, and I've been taking a much needed break (aside from doing some videos of course!) Introducing - "The Rock Record: TLDR" ! This year, I challenged myself to create one long-form video per month in order to help me practice storytelling and video editing. I called it "The Rock Record", where I would help viewers read the stories written in the stones around us. However, I noticed that even my best-performing videos still only get about 5 minutes of average viewing time, especially as I'm still learning to tell those longer form stories. I wanted to create something shorter than the 15 minute in-depth story, and more substantial than the 2 minute Short / TikTok version. Something that people could watch quickly, but still get some good information out of. So, I've created the TLDR for those who don't have time to watch the full Rock Record videos! These are all under 5 minutes long, and summarize the best parts of "The Rock Record" full-length videos. My hope is that this will spark enough people's curiosity that they will go check out the longer videos, but even if it doesn't, I hope it will encourage them to think more about the rocks that surround them.
