On October 13, 2024, the small town of Mt. Olive, Illinois, came alive with pride and reflection as it marked the 125th anniversary of the Union Miners’ Cemetery, a sacred ground for the labor movement. UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts delivered a stirring keynote address at the foot of the towering Mother Jones monument. “Don’t tell me the blood of Mother Jones, and John L. Lewis, and all those great leaders don’t flow through your veins. I know it does." - Cecil E. Roberts

A union for all workers since 1890
About us
The United Mine Workers of America is a diverse union with membership that includes coal miners, manufacturing workers, clean coal technicians, health care workers, corrections officers and public employees throughout the United States and Canada. The UMWA is achieving significant success in providing workers with a voice on the job and financial security at home. Because of the union’s long-term emphasis on safety, UMWA members work in the safest environments in their respective industries. The UMWA continues the fight we began in 1890 for safe workplaces, good wages and benefits, and strong representation for working families throughout North America.

We need your help! The Monongalia County Commissioners keep creating the narrative that the employees in the Assessor's office don't need permission to form a union. Yet, in the same breath, they claim they won't recognize the union if employees vote "yes." We demand acknowledgment and recognition of the union to represent its employees. Without this, even if employees vote to unionize, the commission has no obligation to negotiate a contract. Voting "yes" becomes meaningless without a binding contract. They're offering no assurances! While it may not be legally required to state in writing that they will recognize the union, it is the right thing to do. Write to the Mon County Commission office and tell them to STOP UNION BUSTING! https://lnkd.in/e6MbX-yB

Stand up for workers' rights: Stop union busting in Monongalia County! The Monongalia County Commission Office is denying its employees the opportunity to hold an election to unionize. Despite workers expressing their support for joining the UMWA, the Commission Office is obstructing the unionization process. Help us fight the injustice! https://lnkd.in/eWF9JgZA
