🦈 Last week was #SHARKWEEK in ACC 211 (Intro to Managerial Accounting)! 🦈 Thanks to an exciting collaboration between Mrs. Kristen Thornton, MAcc, CMA, and Dr. Kristin Hamm, along with Department of Management at Missouri State University's Entrepreneurship Lab, our students gained hands-on #experience in crafting a #professional pitch for potential #investors. In this unique project, the #EntrepreneurshipLab provided students with a product prototype, #challenging them to create a compelling pitch that included a product summary, target customer, marketing plan, and breakeven analysis. Students then presented to their "sharks," asking for an initial investment that reflected their calculated needs. This experience empowered our students to build essential entrepreneurial skills, blending real-world scenarios with classroom learning!

Companies that make mistakes trying to avoid #taxes end up having to restate their #taxreturns, improve their #management practices, and become less aggressive because they understandably get more attention from the IRS. But did you know companies that make mistakes without trying to avoid taxes restate their tax returns, but make little or no change to management practices because weak corporate governance didn’t improve through the #restatement process. Restatements increase costs and scrutiny so stakeholders should be aware that firms that heavily avoid taxes typically reduce tax avoidance to more acceptable levels, while firms with low tax avoidance tend to maintain lower avoidance and governance mechanisms likely leading to additional restatements. We are excited to highlight Dr. Mollie Adams on her recent #research article, "Tax-related restatements and tax avoidance behavior." This research looks at how a company’s efforts to avoid taxes might lead to mistakes requiring tax-related restatements and how these mistakes can change management behavior regarding future tax avoidance decisions. The key concepts in the study show how #taxavoidance and mistakes in tax reporting are connected, and whether companies change their behavior when they get caught making mistakes. The School of Accountancy Missouri State University is proud to showcase Dr. Adams and her (ABDC ranked) "A" level publication in the Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance (JAAF) Conference. Check out the comments for a link to Dr. Adam's article!
