Last week, Foundry hosted Neural York Night in New York City alongside Alumni Ventures and J.P. Morgan, and we were truly energized by the enthusiasm in the room. A huge shoutout to everyone who stepped up on the soapbox for a one-minute pitch—your ideas and passion were inspiring. From an interdisciplinary research group out of Poland creating open-source AI models for parameterization of radiological reports to defense tech startups driving innovation in the government ecosystem, it was amazing to see such a diverse range of AI pioneers in one space. Thank you all for being part of it! 🎉

I’m excited to launch a new project I’ve been working on for 2 years with the legendary director of Koyaanisqatsi, Godfrey Reggio. THE VIVID UNKNOWN is an AI-driven immersive installation that reimagines Reggio's 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi through cutting edge technology, interactive design, and machine learning. Built using a custom generative AI model trained on Reggio’s archives, the project is a meditation on humanity’s rise and the relentless encroachment of technology upon the natural world. Visitors’ movements are tracked in real-time via computer vision, reshaping the evolving narrative playing out across the installation's monumental triptych. What begins in harmony crescendos into dystopia, compelling participants to confront the unsettling question: What happens when we can no longer distinguish ourselves from the systems we create? THE VIVID UNKNOWN (2024) By John Fitzgerald and Godfrey Reggio AI-driven immersive installation, dimensions variable Team: • Dan M. - Technical Director • Benjamin Shirken - Composer • Matt Tierney - Producer, ML Advisor • Elie Zananiri - Computer Vision Developer • Graham Milliken, Jazia Hammoudi, Matt Russotti - Producers • Stan Wiechers - Casinoqatsi Developer • Zachary Novack, Julian McAuley, and Taylor Berg-Kirkpatrick - AI Music Research Scientists Co-Produced by: • Onassis ONX and ONASSIS FOUNDATION (Karen, Afroditi, and Prodromos) • Agog (Amy, Erika, and Chip) • Foundry (Amanda, Vivek, and Jared) ML compute for AI inference Special Thanks • Dunvagen Music Publishers Inc. and Institute for Regional Education.
