Strong Minnesota representation at the Grantmakers in Aging Conference in Detroit, including many from Finish Strong. What an inspiring week! It was great to meet so many new colleagues from across the country supporting the wellbeing our elders. Right now, for the first time in history, there are more people age 65+ in Minnesota than there are school-age children. To my philanthropy friends: Investing in aging services is crucial for the wellbeing of older adults AND their families. Many grantmakers are funding aging, even if they don't highlight it as a focus. Curious, how do YOU serve older adults? #GIAging24 Good to see you Mary Madill, Mary Ek, Jaime Renner, Sara Whitehead, Alice Hill, and Heidi Grandstrand!

Remembering Tom Hyder - 1950-2024 It is with great sadness that the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Gerontological Society acknowledges the passing of Tom Hyder who died suddenly on October 10, 2024. Tom served as the Executive Director of MGS from 2014 to 2021 and again in 2022. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife Carole, his daughter-in-law Adrienne Hyder, his grandsons Leon and Rey, and his extended family. Tom led MGS during a pivotal time in its long history. He brought the Society fully into the virtual age, ensured financial stability, strengthened the MGS scholarship endowment, and formed partnerships across a wide variety of stakeholders. For many of us, Tom was a mentor and a friend. For all of us, Tom showed us the power of grace, humility, and kindness. The link to Tom’s obituary is: https://lnkd.in/gBBxKN6Z In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation can be made to the Minnesota Gerontological Society: “In memory of Tom Hyder.” https://lnkd.in/gBQdTxzY
Our longtime Delegate Deb A. Taylor has been such a fierce, positive, innovative source of light and energy for Senior Community Services, Minnesota Leadership Council on Aging, and our state’s entire aging sector. A hard transition, but we know she will continue to bring her full amazing self to all that comes next too!
I am writing to share the bittersweet news that, after much consideration, Deb A. Taylor will retire from her position as CEO of Senior Community Services (SCS) in May 2025. Throughout her 17 years of leadership, Deb has been a transformative force at SCS, guiding the organization with a vision that has significantly advanced our mission of Empowering People as They Age. She and her team's strategic foresight has led to the implementation of innovative programs that have not only enhanced the lives of older adults and caregivers but also strengthened community ties. Deb's commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration has inspired countless clients, colleagues, and partners. Under her guidance, SCS has established itself as a leader in the nonprofit sector, known for its compassionate service and dedication to supporting independence among older adults. Her collaborative approach to navigating challenges and implementing effective solutions, alongside our dedicated team, has fostered a culture of shared leadership and set a high standard for collective decision-making within our organization. As we prepare for this transition, the SCS Board will engage in a thorough process to select Deb’s successor. We are committed to finding a candidate who shares her passion for older adults and possesses a strong track record in nurturing a healthy, inclusive work culture while driving transformative change. We look forward to continuing our vision of Reimagining Aging by serving compassionately, connecting communities, and supporting independence!
