Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Stanislaus County Office of Education’s Leadership Academy for their Public Safety Day! Chief Gillespie and Captain Adams kicked off the day, welcoming students to MPD. From there, the students experienced presentations from our SWAT team, K9 Unit, UAV operators, and the Real Time Crime Center. We’re grateful for this annual opportunity to connect with future leaders, sharing insights into law enforcement careers, MPD’s latest technology, and our role in serving the community. #FutureLeaders #LeadershipAcademy #LawEnforcementInTheCommunity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 17, 2024 Modesto Police Crack Down on Illegal Activities at Smoke Shops Modesto, CA – Over the past several months, the Modesto Police Department, in partnership with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) and the District Attorney’s Office, has been conducting comprehensive inspections of smoke shops throughout the city. These operations have been driven by the blatant disregard many of these smoke shops have for clearly established California law, and more importantly, the health threat they pose to our community. Following the emergency regulations on hemp products enacted last month, Modesto Police launched a weeklong operation that resulted in the inspection of 43 businesses. During these inspections, 22 individuals were arrested for offenses including illegal gambling operations and possession of marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms for sale. Additionally, 12 businesses were found selling THC-infused products banned under the new regulations, many of which were marketed to children. “We will not tolerate businesses that prioritize profit over the safety of our youth,” said Captain Chris Adams, who leads the Investigative Services Division. “Our community deserves better, and we are committed to using every legal tool to shut down these illegal operations.” Chief Brandon Gillespie emphasized the department’s zero-tolerance approach: “These businesses are flagrantly disregarding laws meant to protect the most vulnerable members of our community—our children. We will continue to take decisive action against those who choose profit over safety. Our message is clear: we are coming after you.” The Modesto Police Department will continue to work closely with its partners and the City Attorney’s Office to enforce compliance and protect the community. A press conference was held today at the Modesto Police Department, where we highlighted the operation and reaffirmed our zero-tolerance stance.
