We were thrilled to partner with Money By Mel this past weekend to host a "Money & More in 2024: A Crash Course in Personal Finance" workshop for Virginia's talented young professionals. 🤑 Personal finance expert Mel Borja took attendees through an invaluable deep dive covering money mindsets, goal setting, budgeting, saving, debt repayment, credit, and investing fundamentals. Her energy and expertise made these often dry topics engaging and actionable. 💸 Some key highlights included reflective exercises to unpack your personal money relationship, strategies for effective goal setting across different time horizons, and step-by-step guides for tracking expenses and creating a realistic budget. Mel also demystified the investing world, empowering students with the knowledge to start building wealth through index funds. 📈 Throughout the workshop, Mel reinforced that money is simply a tool to create the life you want. With purposeful planning and healthy habits, students can make their money work for them towards their goals. We ended the day with a discussion acknowledging that achieving sustained financial success requires more than just personal budgeting and investing know-how. While building skills like goal-setting, expense tracking, debt repayment, and low-cost investing are crucial, advocacy can influence systemic factors impacting financial mobility. From pushing for policies that increase access to affordable housing, student loan reforms, better retirement plan coverage, and workforce development initiatives - young people have an opportunity to drive meaningful change. By engaging with the legislative process, cultivating relationships with stakeholders, and collectively voicing their perspectives, young professionals can help break down institutional barriers and create an environment more conducive to long-term financial health and prosperity for all. 🏛️ Special thanks to our sponsor, AARP Virginia, for making this event possible and to Jared Calfee for joining us to answer questions about retirement and social security! 👏🏻

Love this piece in TIME Magazine! The Financial Diet was a key resource for me after I graduated college and starting working full-time.

We’re featured in TIME! “But the fact that women may think differently about money doesn’t mean they’re worse at it. In fact, Fagan, 35, set out to dismantle the idea that personal finance is a byzantine concept, and today, The Financial Diet uses various forms of media, from books like its upcoming Beyond Getting By to explainer and confessional videos on YouTube, to demystify money. “The entire concept that money is complicated and difficult to understand is part of the problem, because it’s not,” she says. “It doesn’t require some special knowledge or understanding. Anyone can manage money.””

In 2021, if you had told me that MBM would grow to the point that we are on a panel in collaboration with FICO and Senator Mark Warner's office...I would have simply collapsed. But here we are! When Capital Region VA Small Business Development Center reached out asking if I wanted to be part of this event I was thrilled. Over the years I've seen many creative, dynamic, amazing small business owners that get hit hard with personal financial issues. It's honestly become one of my Roman Empires. We are doing our small part of change that! Whether you are a freelancer, part-time, or full-time small business owner, you won't want to miss this FREE event! Thank you to Capital Region VA Small Business Development Center, FICO, George Mason University, Richmond Public Library, and more for making this happen! When clients come to me in significant credit card debt, they also tend to have very little (or nothing) in savings. It’s a familiar story: you want to pay off credit card debt as quickly as possible, so every extra dollar you have you throw at your debt. Then they are surprised when I tell them, we’re going to pause on the debt payoff. Huh??? How is not paying off debt supposed to help with paying off debt?? Well, it turns out that not having emergency savings keeps you in the debt payoff cycle. If you put all your extra $$$ toward debt, you are one bad day away from having to run up your credit card. Will you pay more in interest in the long run? Maybe, but think about how many things you won’t need to run on your credit card because you actually have savings to lean on. I’m asking — nay, BEGGING you — prioritize your emergency fund FIRST before you tackle your credit card debt. Once your EF is full, you can take nearly all of what you’ve been putting toward savings and put it towards debt payoff! Sustainable debt payoff >>>> frantic debt payoff any day!!
