Mount Sinai’s Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance has opened the Cohen Center for Recovery From Complex Chronic Illnesses (CoRE), dedicated to treating patients with conditions such as long Lyme disease/Lyme+, long COVID, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). Supported by philanthropy from various donors, including an inaugural gift from Beth and Joshua Nash and a naming gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, the $10-million Center is located at The Mount Sinai Hospital. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to accommodate up to 700 new patients annually. Additionally, the center will initiate research programs to explore the similarities and differences among patients with these conditions, aiding in the development of novel therapies. #WeFindAWay

I want to wrap up the week by celebrating our beloved facility dogs–Professor, Moby, and Summer. In today’s fast-paced, high-pressure #healthcare environment, the mental well-being of employees, patients, and their families is more important than ever.    Growing up with dogs, and having two now, I’ve experienced firsthand the comfort and calm animals bring. Professor, Moby, and Summer create a healing space for everyone they meet. The Mount Sinai Paws & Play program combines well-trained therapy dogs with expert care from child life specialists and creative arts therapists, offering a unique and healing experience for patients, families, and staff across the Mount Sinai Health System. #CarrTalk #WeFindAWay

Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally transforming how we work. Last Thursday, Beth Essig, EVP and General Counsel of the Mount Sinai Health System, shared her expertise on deploying #AI while navigating shifting legal liabilities. Beth, alongside industry leaders Rob Beard (Mastercard), Jeff McMillan (Morgan Stanley), and Shannon Thyme Klinger (Moderna), in conversation with Nick Elliott (Dow Jones Risk and Research) discussed how regulated sectors like #healthcare and #finance are balancing innovation with essential legal guardrails. #WeFindAWay #WSJ #TheModernGC The Wall Street Journal

When Rowland Egerton-Warburton was born in 2012, doctors gave him a clean bill of health. However, when he returned home, his parents, Genie and Jamie, noticed unusual traits that they hadn’t observed with their other children: he had a notched eyelid, clenched fists, and an unusual gaze toward lights and moving objects. While he initially met developmental milestones, his progress suddenly stopped. Genie and Jamie spent the next four years trying to figure out what was happening to their son, without receiving any conclusive answers from medical professionals. In August 2016, when Rowland was four years old, Genie and Jamie decided to have a whole exome sequencing test, involving saliva and blood tests for themselves and Rowland. Rowland was diagnosed with ADNP syndrome, a rare genetic condition that is non-inherited, which causes a range of developmental issues and can lead to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Rowland’s diagnosis led Genie and Jamie to bring ADNP syndrome to the attention of the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment. They met with Drs. Joseph D. Buxbaum and Alexander Kolevzon. In the spring 2017, Rowland underwent a comprehensive evaluation by Drs. Kolevzon and Paige Siper, who recommended what types of therapies would help Rowland specifically. Genie has since been able to coordinate a team of specialists in her school district to work with Rowland, and reached out to Dr. Siper to provide additional guidance to the team about the specifics of his rare condition. “Dr. Paige Siper has been incredible,” she said. She and Jamie later joined the Seaver Autism Center Associates Board and have been active members ever since. In recognition of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, we want to share Marielys’ story. After losing her first pregnancy on April 12, 2022, and discovering she was pregnant again, Marielys began researching which hospital would provide the specialized care she needed, ultimately finding Mount Sinai’s Rainbow Clinic five weeks into her new pregnancy. Before giving birth to her rainbow baby, Marielys spent 64 days at Mount Sinai, receiving the support necessary for her journey. Remarkably, she welcomed her rainbow baby on April 12, 2024—exactly two years to the date of her loss. The Mount Sinai Rainbow Clinic is a vital resource for families who have experienced perinatal loss, such as stillbirth or miscarriage. By offering specialized medical care and emotional support, the clinic helps parents navigate the challenges of future pregnancies with hope and reassurance. With a personalized approach to care, patients receive enhanced monitoring and a range of supportive services designed to address their unique needs. This compassionate environment fosters healing and empowers families as they move forward, making a significant difference in their journeys toward parenthood. #WeFindAWay #stillbornawareness #pregnancy #rainbowbaby
