Editor, Reporter and Host at Minnesota Public Radio News

I am truly honored to serve as the next host of Minnesota Now on MPR News Minnesota has been my home since I was a little kid and I’ve spent more than a decade reporting across the state in radio and television news. I’ve spent the last 7 of those years at MPR. I walked in the doors as the weekend reporter and have the same pride and gratitude for MPR News today as I get ready to serve as a host. I still take a moment before I go on air every time to think about how fortunate I am to be able to use my voice and live freely on my own terms. I take a moment for those who can’t. I was born in Denmark to Iranian parents who worked hard and sacrificed so much for me to get here and I don’t take any of it for granted. I’m truly grateful for every person who has consistently supported and encouraged me over the years. If you’re fortunate, you have people who remind you who you are when you’ve forgotten, who sit patiently with you in the hard times and are truly happy for you in the good times, who deeply value you just for being you. I’m grateful to Cathy Wurzer and the brilliant team of producers who have worked incredibly hard to get this show started and thriving. It’s a gift to be able to have this full hour of local Minnesota news and we will continue bringing timely, thoughtful and down-to-earth conversations to our audiences. We will also explore! Where and how can we reach even more people across the state and tell the stories people need to hear and see? What are you curious about? There is room for urgency AND nuance in the stories and conversations we deliver through public media. A healthy balance of topics is what we will strive to serve up every day to enrich your life. Join me over the noon hour on Minnesota Now starting in mid-November. Let’s catch up over lunch! 🥪🎤❤️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/gvuaebMT

Today, we’re partnering with Blue Ridge Public Radio (BPR) in North Carolina, a station partner who’s remained on-air following widespread devastation from Hurricane Helene. Blue Ridge Public Radio is providing urgent, factual information to their local community and to station partners like us tracking the news from afar. At MPR, we believe in public media for the public good. When a crisis hits close to home or afar, we’re here with news, music and information – free of paywalls. This kind of independent media provides facts, dispels disinformation, and creates connection and comfort when it matters most. Today, donate to MPR and power essential public media right here in Minnesota. When you do, MPR will chip in $10 to Blue Ridge Public Radio’s disaster recovery and reporting fund. 📞1-800-227-2811 💻 https://lnkd.in/gzFXBSaB

Journalist: News editor, team leader, reporter, storytelling coach

This year I finally applied to a program I’ve admired for like seven years and I got in, and this month I spent six days in Atlanta for it. The 25 journalists and I were picked for this year’s class of the Online News Association’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator for our work pushing our organizations and the industry forward with a focus on digital media. The group has women working across the U.S. and in six other countries, and the ONA conference and accelerator workshop was our first and only time all together in person — talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I came back with so many ideas about next steps for the initiative I oversee creating news content for diverse young adults in Minnesota, how to improve digital content strategy overall, how to pitch using generative AI to improve newsroom efficiency, and so much more. Thank you to Online News Association for selecting me to be part of this cohort; to Kelsey Proud for organizing our program and connecting us with leaders from The New York Times, Wordpress and more; and to MPR News for supporting me financially and professionally in my work to make news content that serves diverse young audiences. #ona24

    Senior Reporter at MPR News

Recently Ann Vote, 41, visited a New Ulm bookstore with her 12-year-old daughter, Ella. This is the kind of moment Vote dreamed about 14 years ago when she struggled with infertility. She had problems getting pregnant and suffered several miscarriages. Vote said infertility causes a particular kind of grief and a kind of loss many choose to keep private. “When you struggle with infertility, you dream of it, and you work hard, and you wait,” she said. ”You’re grieving the year you just lost without the family you thought you’d have at that point, and that is really tough.” My story for MPR News.

Are Minnesotans loving their lakes to death? Nearly half of wild shorelines that protect lakes from pollution are now gone. It’s possible to repair the damage, but is the will there to do it? Join MPR News correspondent Kirsti Marohn as she explores these questions and takes us for a lake tour to see how suburban-style development is changing Minnesota’s lakeshores.
