🤩 In the wild, running our First-Timer Orientation at #ONA24. As you can probably see, my little connector heart was very full to have a few hundred ONA newbies making new friends, setting up plans to explore Atlanta together and learning about how to make the most of the training and networking happening this week at our conference. The vibe is just the best. Shoutout to the wonderful Lauren Williams for co-hosting and helping us welcome our community. 📸: the amazing Joe McFetridge for Online News Association

Being a journalist these days isn’t easy. With the global rise of authoritarianism, the persecution of journalists—from online threats to arbitrary detentions and even murders—shrinking budgets, low wages, and the constant struggle for funding, it’s hard to stay hopeful. Many colleagues and I, who have worked almost exclusively in journalism, often question our employability: Is it the country where I work? The industry? Or is it me? We’re passionate about #journalism; we define ourselves as #journalists, but we still wonder: Can we keep doing this for the next 20 years? Despite these uncertainties, opportunities like this remind me of the impact of our work: I was incredibly inspired and honored to serve as a jury member for the Online News Association's 2024 General Excellence in Online Journalism Awards, where we evaluated micro, small, medium, and large newsrooms. Outstanding, innovative journalism can be found at every newsroom size—shining a light on stories we need to know about, whether it’s our governments, Big Tech, or drug trafficking. Behind those stories are journalists committed to making a difference in people’s lives. These global awards have set the standard for excellence and innovation in digital journalism for 25 years. The winners will be revealed today at the #OnlineJournalismAwards ceremony during #ONA24 in Atlanta. If you need some inspiration or a reminder of why you love this field, grab a coffee and spend some time exploring the amazing work being done by talented newsrooms and colleagues ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dupGhsgX

The 2024 Online News Association Conference is under way in Atlanta. For 25 years, ONA has gathered newsroom leaders and digital innovators for learning and collaboration. We’re thrilled to host everyone and extend a special welcome to the 500+ first-time attendees at #ONA24! ONA members and past attendees say the conference has brought “untold opportunities,” “an inflection point” and “an amazing combination of level-headedness and optimism.” Plus, our work extends beyond the conference. We connect the journalism community to practical training and networking opportunities all year. Consider joining ONA as an annual member to help sustain our mission: https://lnkd.in/eUTcBxxM
