The Ms. Foundation for Women builds women’s collective power in the U.S. to advance equity and justice for all.

About us

The Ms. Foundation for Women is the leading national social justice foundation devoted to securing rights, equality and justice for women. The Ms. Foundation for Women fights to eliminate barriers for all women. We fight to keep lawmakers and public figures in check, to protect and fortify our fragile successes, and to secure the same opportunities for all women in the US. We especially focus on those whose voices are muted because of their economic realities and everyday challenges. Because to secure a better future for ourselves, our families, our communities, this is a fight we can't afford to lose. At the Ms. Foundation, we work to bring attention to the real challenges facing women, especially women of color and low-income women, living in poverty, working paycheck to paycheck or both. We speak out on the issues, tirelessly advocate for national and statewide policy change that will address these challenges, and support more than 100 organizations throughout the country that are working for change on a grassroots level.

We returned to Martha's Vineyard for our annual Ms. on Martha's event last week, where President & CEO Teresa C. Younger had an inspiring conversation with reproductive justice foremother Byllye Avery in a full-circle moment. “It’s good to be here for Ms. Foundation. They gave me the very first money over 40 years ago. They took a chance on me, someone who had an idea and saw there was a need.” Byllye's work was instrumental in the development of the reproductive justice framework and the discussion served as a reminder that if we want to create the future we deserve, we must recognize and invest in the vision and long-term sustainability of movement leaders to transform society. Today, we announce the conclusion of the largest fundraising campaign in our 50-year history: Creating the Future We Deserve. We achieved and surpassed our $100 million goal by raising $106 million in funding since launching the campaign in January 2023. “This record investment in women and girls comes at a time in United States history when our fundamental human rights are under attack," says President & CEO Teresa C. Younger. "For decades to come, Ms. Foundation will use these gifts to bolster and support future feminist movement building led by women, girls and gender expansive folks across the country. Our grantee partners are on the front lines of nearly every fight. What is most exciting for me is that people dreamed with us about the world we could create by making commitments to a future that they may never see themselves. Ms. Foundation will be around for another 50 years because of these commitments.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gBxHf-X7

From childcare advocacy to launching a free peer counseling program for queer and trans Asian and Pacific Islanders, our grantee partners are doing incredible work nationwide. We're proud to support and amplify their efforts. Check out some recent grantee news: "We want queer and trans people to have safe and gainful employment, safe and stable housing, and ways to talk about being unsafe that don’t invest in punishment and incarceration.” said Yuan Wang, executive director of Lavender Phoenix. Read more: https://lnkd.in/exCYHSSa "We need to be talking to every woman, because every woman is our responsibility. Am I my sister’s keeper? Yes, I am. Am I my queer sister’s keeper? Yes, I am," urged Deon Haywood, executive director of Women With A Vision. Read more: https://lnkd.in/erisekqK Twyla Carter, attorney-in-chief & CEO of The Legal Aid Society reported, “The need for funding our mission of defending low-income New Yorkers is about fairness, it’s about giving people a fair chance at justice.” Watch: https://lnkd.in/e_cRq2tw "Applying a reproductive and sexual justice analysis is an important part of achieving the best health outcomes by keeping those most impacted in the center of the lens and on the frontlines of their own liberation and wellness," discussed Cherisse Scott, founder & CEO of Sister Reach. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVHSHjmv Danielle Atkinson, Mothering Justice national executive director & founder, said, “Given access to information and understanding of the system, mothers of color can be a powerful force in progressive policy change on behalf of all families because we know that they disproportionately are affected and impacted by policy in this country.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eWX3bAbx

The Midwest has become a defining battleground for national issues that impact the lives of women, girls, and gender-expansive people, and is home to some of the most regressive legislation in the nation. Despite this, our Pocket Change research showed that women and girls of color in the Midwest receive the second-lowest level of philanthropic support (with the South coming in first) at just $2.99 each per year. This month, we launched our Ms. Midwest grantmaking initiative, which will focus resources and efforts to the region, an outgrowth of our broader strategy (for which our Ms. South strategy, now in its fourth year, paved the way). Learn more about our latest initiative and the thinking behind it in a blog by Senior Program Officer Samantha Franklin: https://lnkd.in/eYEaBrN6
