More amazing guest lecturers from industry! Tonight we welcome Vincent S Stoll, Senior Research Fellow and Director of #StructuralBiology at AbbVie. Vinnie's been an #MSBiotech guest presenter for many years in our #EarlyDrugDiscovery course, sharing how X-ray #crystallography can be used to refine lead compounds for drug development by identifying structural characteristics for potential protein binding sites. While at AbbVie, Dr. Stoll has focused on structure-based drug design on Antiviral, Immunology, Oncology and Neuroscience targets with at least three compounds currently in clinical trials. Vincent was inducted into Abbvie’s elite scientific society, the Volwiler Society in 2005. He is an inventor on 7 issued patents and has more than 30 publications while at AbbVie. It's an honor to have such distinguished experts contributing to the M.S. in Biotechnology Program, UW-Madison. #BiotechBadgers! About the Early Drug Discovery course: https://lnkd.in/gjx-6vTF

This important story highlights how building relationships is central to the Office of Biohealth Industry Partnerships, UW SMPH and their commitment to enhancing human health for all people. For clinical trials to to deliver on the promises of precision medicine, they must include the most diverse participant population possible. The inclusion of the Wisconsin natives tribes in clinical research is an enormous first step. This collaboration lays a foundation for a trusting partnership with communities of people who've repeatedly been isolated from access to medical and public health resources and who've rarely (if ever) been invited to collaborate in the discovery of new medical advances. Kurt J. Zimmerman is the founding director of the #MSBiotech program and a key figure behind the discussions between the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and Wisconsin tribal council leaders. While the Office of Biohealth Industry Partnerships works adjacent to the #MSBiotech program, this tribal council research collaboration highlights the core values we share in fostering meaningful relationships and maintaining a genuine commitment to the people we serve, be them students, alumni, industry partners, or the communities surrounding all of us. #BiotechBadgers #TheWisconsinIdea #OnWisconsin https://lnkd.in/gCNf-XXM
