Thanks for sharing this insight from your research, Mustafa Rfat. The intersectionality of having a disability and experiencing refugee status is such a difficult and complicated combination.
One of the initial findings of my dissertation work shows that refugees with psychiatric disabilities are less likely to be resettled in the U.S. All too familiar issues, people with disabilities often cry in silence!!!

Have you thought about how other cultures define and understand disability? In a previous Community of Practice meeting, Bora Lee, director of Utah Assistive Technology Program (UATP) shared that some cultures appreciate the unique contributions of people with disabilities, perhaps more than is the norm here in Utah. What do you think about this? Do you agree? Share your thoughts in the comments! #UtahDisabilityDiversity #DisabilityDiversity #DisabilityAwareness #CulturalDiversity #Diversity

To finish out #HispanicHeritageMonth, we wanted to review a study that looked at factors weighing in on whether Hispanic/Latine individuals were seeking disability services. As we've shared previously, some aspects of Hispanic/Latine culture may discourage the use of treatment or accommodations for disabilities. Another complication is whether the information is shared in a way that individuals can understand and benefit from them (for example, is the information provided in Spanish for Spanish-speaking individuals and families?). What other factors would you say play into the likelihood of Hispanic/Latine individuals accessing disability services? Share your thoughts in the comments! If you're interested to learn more about the intersection of Hispanic/Latine culture and disabilities, check out our infographic on the topic! https://ow.ly/gfaB50TKQUG #UtahDisabilityDiversity #Hispanic #Latine #Latino #Latina #DisabilityDiversity #DisabilityServices #DisabilityAwareness #Spanish #LanguageBarrier #CulturalValues #CulturalDiversity

One hurdle that many Hispanic/Latine people face is the language barrier, especially for people who recently moved here from other countries. In this last month's Community of Practice Meeting, Diana Ortiz shared her experiences helping people navigate human services using the Spanish language, and the many barriers she and her consumers have experienced. What experiences do you have assisting clients or navigating services in another language? Share in the comments, we would love to hear from you! #UtahDisabilityDiversity #DisabilityDiversity #MuldinetCoP #LanguageBarriers #Communication #Spanish #Language #Hispanic #Latine #Latino #Latinx #HispanicHeritageMonth
