Last week teams at MultiCare Capital Medical Center, Deaconess and MultiCare Valley hospitals launched their participation in the TeamBirth initiative. TeamBirth, developed by Ariadne Labs is an industry-standard process that prioritizes safety, equity and dignity in childbirth by improving communication and teamwork, to ensure every person giving birth has a voice in their care. The Washington State Hospital Association has collaborated with Ariadne Labs to roll out the initiative statewide in a total of four cohorts—the participating MultiCare birth centers are part of cohort three. TeamBirth has been implemented by more than 130 birth centers across 15 states. “Obstetrics can be a complex, highly dynamic environment where there’s a lot of coordination and decision-making between providers, staff and the patient. Our teams work very collaboratively, and we’re always looking for ways to strengthen communication. TeamBirth’s design is a collaborative communication framework that will help us elevate the childbirth experience,” explains Vicki Birkeland, RN, DNP, NEA-BC, Inland Northwest region director of women’s services.

About us
MultiCare’s roots in the Pacific Northwest go back to 1882, with the founding of Tacoma’s first hospital. Over the years, we’ve grown from a Tacoma-centric, hospital-based organization into the largest, community-based, locally governed health system in the state of Washington. Today, our comprehensive system of health includes more than 300 primary, urgent, pediatric and specialty care locations across Washington, Idaho and Oregon, as well as 13 hospitals. We welcome patients from the entire Pacific Northwest region and our 20,000-plus team members — including employees, providers and volunteers — proudly care for the communities we serve. Without a doubt, our organization has changed over the years. But what has never changed, throughout our long history, has been our dedication to health and wellness of the people of the Pacific Northwest. Guided by our mission, vision and values, we are on continuous journey to deliver the services that our communities need, and to ensure access to those services, now and in the future.

For the 16th consecutive year, MultiCare Health System was named one of the “Most Wired” U.S. health care organizations by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). MultiCare has been at the forefront of implementing technology in patient care. We have implemented Moxi The Robot in several hospitals to help nurses with everyday tasks to allow them to spend more time with patients, and Deaconess Hospital in Spokane uses a virtual nursing program designed to help nurses handle patient admissions, medicine list collections and provide discharge instructions virtually. “This award reflects the partnership between operations and technology across MultiCare. We continue to look for ways to use the latest technology to help our staff spend more time with our patients while delivering exceptional care at our hospitals and clinics,” said Bradd Busick, senior vice president and chief information officer at MultiCare.

Just two weeks ago, I wrapped up my internship at MultiCare Health System on their Cloud Engineering Team! Having had time to reflect on the past few months, I feel truly blessed to have been part of such an amazing experience. During my time at MultiCare, I had the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally by working on projects that addressed real-world challenges and connecting with industry professionals who offered invaluable advice. From tackling cloud automation tasks involving enterprise application secrets and certificates to diagramming server architecture for Epic System end users, I gained hands-on experience that was truly priceless. A special thanks to my manager, Gregg Rios for your support and guidance, and Melissa Atienza and Gaby Morales for leading our weekly professional development sessions. Your mentorship has made a lasting impact on my learning and growth. I’m incredibly grateful for this experience and excited to see where this journey takes me next!
