Last week at the Connecticut Bar Association’s 12th Biennial Bench-Bar Conference, Lorey Rives Leddy was presented with the District of Connecticut’s 2024 Pro Bono Award for outstanding contributions in providing legal services to indigent persons. Appointed as pro bono counsel in 2017, Lorey has served for the last seven years as counsel to more than two dozen prisoners challenging their conditions of confinement. Demonstrating a tireless commitment to the plaintiffs through class certification proceedings and extended settlement negotiations in a difficult case, Lorey earned the respect of her clients and the gratitude of the Court for her effective advocacy on behalf of a large group of persons who otherwise would have had to navigate complex legal issues on their own. Chief Judge Michael P. Shea remarked, “Attorney Leddy’s extraordinary pro bono service ensured meaningful access to justice for her many clients in need of legal representation. Her years of involvement were instrumental to the just resolution of the case.” Alongside Lorey, Robert Reardon (Reardon Law Firm), Thomas Gerarde (Howd & Ludorf LLC) and Joseph Nawrocki, (SouthBank Legal LLC) received honorable mention for their dedication in providing legal services to those in need. Congratulations to Lorey and all of the honorees! #MurthaCullina #ConnecticutLawFirm #ProBono #DistrictOfConnecticut

Attorneys Thomas "Tom" Vangel, James Radke and Lindsey McComber co-authored an article titled, “New Advanced Clean Truck Rules Will Impact Mass. Dealers,” for the October issue of Massachusetts Auto Dealer, the official publication of the Massachusetts State Auto Dealers Association. In recent months, auto dealers and officials across various industries in Massachusetts have expressed concern over the looming deadline for the implementation of the Advanced Clean Truck (ACT) and the Heavy-Duty Omnibus (HDO) rules which are scheduled to go in effect in Massachusetts on January 1, 2025. These rules require that manufacturers sell an increasing number of zero emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles greater than 8,500 pounds GVWR, from 2024 to 2035. The implementation of these rules as scheduled will have a major impact on Massachusetts automobile dealers as well as unintended consequences for the transportation sector as a whole. October 1st has come and gone, and new grand lists across many Connecticut municipalities are now in the process of being finalized. During this busy time of the assessment year, it is crucial for property owners—and particularly owners of business personal property—to not lose sight of other crucial deadlines that are right around the corner. Specifically, it's crucial for Connecticut property owners to remember to file their annual personal property declarations with their local assessor, in addition to other documentation if they seek relief such as tax exemption. Failing to file your declaration with the assessor on time can have significant financial consequences. Not only do you risk having a 25% assessment penalty added to your personal property’s annual tax bill or risk being subject to a different depreciation schedule than the one that would apply had you filed by November 1st, but if you own tax-exempt property and fail to file necessary documentation by that date, you risk losing any exemption status altogether.
