About us

KNOWLEDGE IN ACTION SHARING, TEACHING, LISTENING, GUIDING, FORECASTING Formed in 1969, the Museum Education Roundtable fosters professionalism among museum educators by encouraging leadership, scholarship and research in museum- based learning. MER provides leadership in professional development for a broad and diverse audience of museum practitioners and educators. Through its publications, programs, and active communications network, MER: - Supports professionalism among peers and others committed to excellence in museum-based learning, - Encourages leadership, scholarship, and research in museum-based learning, and - Advocates the inclusion and application of museum-based learning in general education and life-long learning. MER publishes the Journal of Museum Education, the only American journal that is devoted to the theory and practice of museum education. Written by museum and education professionals, JME articles explore innovations in the field of museum education, teaching strategies for use in museums and other informal learning environments, visitor research, and evaluation.

  • This current issue of the JME “The Role of Docents: Past, Present and Future” looks at the role of docents in museum settings — the history of programs and continuing changes in the field. The articles featured in this issue consider current issues in docent training and re-imagine a future for docent roles moving forward. For this blog post, MER board member Beatriz Galuban was inspired by the topic to learn more about docent programs and what it is like to be a docent at a museum. Earlier this summer, she had the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with her colleague and friend Jenna S.   • FREE ARTICLE: From Docent to Professional to Activist to Critical Race Theorist: A Biomytholography of a Black Amerian Museum Professional By Porchia Moore The wisdom of Audre Lorde informs us that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.” The origins of many museum collections are that their objects were obtained by colonizers who became the masters of colonized people’s cultural heritage. One of the master’s tools has always been to create and benefit from a system of free labor. Within the museum, the vestiges of the master’s tool of free labor remain, although with different shapes and aims. The system of free labor in the museum is tangential with the presence of the docent corps. This article explores the sensationalism of battles over the fate of docent groups in light of the need to make fundamental shifts in museum praxis.   • 2024 Fall Writing Workshop: Practitioners as Scholars  October 5, 2024 - 9:00–10:15 am PST / 12:00–1:15 pm EST Join us for the 2024 Fall Writing Workshop! Through three classes, participants will work with writer Joyce Young to draft a publishable article in the Journal of Museum Education or a blog article for the Museum Education Roundtable blog. This workshop aims not only to workshop ideas but also to draft a research article or blog article for publication. The workshop will be free to those who are accepted. Please note registration is limited to 15 participants. Classes will be an hour and fifteen minutes at 9 PST/12 EST on October 5, 12, and 19. Come with your ideas, questions, and hopes to publish for the Journal of Museum Education! Space is limited. Priority will be given to folks who have never published before. Applications are due by September 6; applicants will be notified of their admission status by September 13.
