"New York’s most glamorous dollhouse returns to the Museum of the City of New York next month." — The New York Times on the Stettheimer Dollhouse, which will go on view later this fall following an extensive conservation project. A new exhibition, "The Stettheimer Dollhouse in a New Light," heralds its return to our galleries and opens on November 22. Handcrafted over nearly two decades by Carrie Stettheimer, the dollhouse captures the elegance and vibrancy of post-World War I New York City. As the city thrived as a cultural hub for art, theater, literature, and fashion, this extraordinary miniature world reflects the stylish lives of the Stettheimer sisters—Carrie, Ettie, and Florine—who were key figures in New York's early 20th-century artistic community. A significant artistic enterprise in its own right, the dollhouse also features miniature works by renowned artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Gaston Lachaise, showcasing the vibrant cultural milieu of the time. • When Shirley Chisholm joined Congress in 1969, she wasn’t just making history—she was shaking up the system. As the first Black woman in Congress, Chisholm took on the racism and sexism baked into the institution. She even rejected her first committee assignment, saying the Agriculture Committee didn’t make sense for her New York City district. Over the years, she co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, pushing for change on issues like poverty and women’s rights. Today, her legacy lives on. Our exhibition, Changing the Face of Democracy: Shirley Chisholm at 100, which was recently noted in The Economist, tells her story. See the exhibition for yourself and don’t miss our panel on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 7:30 pm, where Dr. Jelani Cobb, Dr. Zinga Fraser, Dr. Keisha Blain, and moderator Sandra Bookman will discuss how Chisholm’s presidential run set the stage for Vice President Kamala Harris and the ongoing influence of Black women in politics. This program is presented as part of our new event series, The Menschel Lecture Series @MCNY. Reserve your spot—https://bit.ly/3UeNFdn

  • In her solo show "Unbossed & Unbowed," acclaimed actress and playwright Ingrid Griffith (@unbossedunbowed) brings to life the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress and the first to run for U.S. president. Griffith portrays 15 unique characters, capturing Chisholm's journey from her childhood in Barbados to her rise as a trailblazer in American politics. “I’m drawn to tell stories about the immigrant experience, about being an outsider and daring to be one’s self,” says Griffith. “I’m interested in social norms and cultural barriers that keep girls and women down, and in stories that promote and celebrate girls and women’s empowerment.” Join us on Friday, October 25, and explore Chisholm's legacy in our exhibition "Changing the Face of Democracy: Shirley Chisholm at 100, on view now. As New York City grew as a tourist destination in the 1920s and ‘30s, establishments catered to shoppers and sightseers across the economic spectrum. Postcards spotlighted streamlined, illuminated signs and inset interior photographs with dramatic perspectives into multiple, dynamic frames. Photographic retouching cleaned up streets, sharpened building lines, or enhanced signage. Cards boasted convenient locations and used confident one-liners, like “An Eating Place of International Fame” and “Quality Food at Its Best.” 🍝🍸 🍾 Visit to see “Art Deco City: New York Postcards from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection" and to explore New York City's emergence as a cultural capital during the interwar years. Through over 250 postcards and objects on view, discover how the image of a glittering, modern metropolis was disseminated across the globe: https://lnkd.in/eUdEYaGJ Image: An Eating Place of International Fame, 1930s.
