"Art Deco City: New York Postcards from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection" is now open! More than an aesthetic, Art Deco was the look that promoted New York City to the world. The exhibition highlights the impact that colorful, mass-produced postcards had in establishing landmarks like the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center as international icons that epitomize the stylishness of Midtown Manhattan. In varied and creative ways, postcards echoed the sleek appeal of these soaring structures, which belied the realities of the Great Depression. Pairing these sought-after souvenirs with an array of images, historic artifacts, film footage, and hands-on interactive experiences, the exhibition uncovers the Art Deco elements that shaped New York's image in the popular imagination. In 1796, a white New Yorker named Aquila Giles took a step towards freedom for Hannah, a 30-year-old enslaved woman, and her young daughter Abigail. But despite signing a manumission deed, Hannah wouldn't be fully free for another six years, and Abigail would have to wait until 1820. As Carolyn Eastman reports in the September/October issue of Smithsonian Magazine, these manumission records, now digitized by #MCNY, reveal the harsh realities of slavery in Northern states. While some were freed quickly, others remained in a painful limbo, reflecting the complex and often reluctant path to liberty. Click the link below to explore these powerful stories and see how Black New Yorkers fought for their freedom, one person at a time. The full documents are now accessible online via the MCNY website, shedding light on a crucial chapter of our shared history: https://lnkd.in/ecCWZATv

Calling the show "vibrant" "intimate," and "satisfying," the write-up includes a mention of a special playlist curated by Vega that features music that inspires the artist and notes a watercolor painting of the Yoruba spirit Changó on loan from Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The Twin Towers stood tall over New York City, a symbol of our city’s ambition and strength. On September 11, 2001, they were forever etched into our collective memory. Today, we remember the thousands of lives lost, the heroes who gave everything, and the resilience of a city that rose from the ashes. As we reflect on this image, we honor the spirit of New York—a city that never forgets and continues to stand united. The Tribute in Light now shines each year, reminding us of both loss and hope.
