The progressive Muslim voice for human rights

About us

Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) is a human rights organization founded in 2007 in Los Angeles, California. Our mission is to advocate for human rights, social justice and inclusion in the United States and around the world by inculcating a culture rooted in human rights through public education, advocacy, and the arts. In a world that has been plagued by terror and Islamophobia, MPV seeks to counter radicalization, hate and misunderstanding of Islam by fostering intercultural and interfaith dialogue on a global platform. MPV is guided by ten principles, namely: 1. Collective identity 2. Equality 3. The separation of religious and state authorities 4. Freedom of speech 5. Universal human rights 6. Gender equality 7. LGBTQI inclusion 8. Critical analysis and interpretation 9. Compassion 10. Diversity Based on these principles, MPV carries out grassroots activities, including interfaith marriages, same-sex marriages, female-led prayers and the provision of avant-garde educational materials, through its local chapters in the US, namely in Atlanta, Columbus, Washington DC, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and in Australia, Canada, Chile, France and Malaysia. These activities serve to promote the mission and values of MPV at the local level. On a global level, MPV carries out activities geared at advocating against human rights abuses carried out in the name of Islam in Muslim-majority states. MPV particularly monitors human rights issues in Muslim-majority countries related to women’s rights, LGBTQI rights, freedom of and from religion and freedom of expression. The main focus of MPV’s work is to stimulate critical thinking of sacred texts and to promote the implementation of progressive values, such as human rights, gender equality, freedom of expression, and freedom of and from religion and belief.

  • One of the most common questions we get is “Where can I learn more about progressive Islam?”. We like to refer individuals to our Recommended Reading Page on our website but in this day and age, so much learning happens on social media so we also like to highlight some of our favorite books through a book of the week series! This week we’re featuring Salt Houses, a novel by Palestinian-American author, Hala Alyan. This piece of historical fiction tells the story of a Palestinian family through the generations as they navigate the Six Day War, the first Intifada, the Gulf War, the second Intifada, and the 2006 Lebanon War. • We are so excited to announce the publishing of Unit 6 of the Progressive Islam Curriculum for Adults! The Progressive Islam Curriculum, generously funded by the A&A Foundation, is a culmination of MPV’s desire to increase accessibility of these progressive interpretations so that the general Muslim population has the tools to understand and practice the truly traditional form of Islam. It is our hope that by making previously scholarly academic interpretations more accessible, that generations of Muslims to come can be oriented towards and knowledgeable about an Islam that is rooted in human rights and traditional and independent interpretations. The Progressive Islam Curriculum consists of 8 different units, which will be released every six weeks over the course of the year and will be available for download on our website. Head to our website - https://lnkd.in/g_2Ch3wM - to download Unit 6: “Freedom of Religion and Belief and Islam” today! If you’d like to support the making of the curriculum and the educational resources that MPV produces you can make a donation to support our work on our website - https://lnkd.in/eMAdfRDs #ProgressiveIslam #ProgressiveIslamCurriculum #IslamicLearning

  • Family law reform at #HRC57 - Join us! A window of opportunity for global mobilization towards #FamilyLawReform has opened with a recent Resolution adopted by the Human Rights Council in October 2023. In light of 2024 being the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family, the Council will also organize a “Panel on State´s Obligations on the Role of the Family in Supporting Human Rights of its Members” during the 57th Human Rights Council Session - and we will be there to highlight the urgency of family law reform on a global scale. We will be presenting evidence of how family laws underpin much of the discrimination against women and girls across the world, advocating for urgent action, solidarity and movement building, and encouraging governments and parliamentarians to commit to family law reforms with concrete actions. Speakers: Adriana Quinones, Head, Human Rights and Development, @UNWomen, HE Caroline Bwanali Mussa, Permanent Representative of Malawi, Maliha Zia, Legal Aid Society, Pakistan and Dimiter Chalev - Chief, Rule of Law, Equality and Non-Discrimination Branch, OHCHR. 📅 25th September 2024, 1:00 - 2:00 pm (Geneva. This week we're featuring the Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World by Dr. John Andrew Morrow, which covers the various covenants the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) initiated with the Christians of the world. This work shines a light on vital pieces of Islamic teachings, which encourage Muslims to practice inclusivity and religious tolerance. • Recently, the parliament of Iraq has proposed changes to the 1959 Personal Status Law, which might legalize child marriage and inhibit the rights of women in matters of divorce, custody, and inheritance. In response to this legislation that endangers the rights of women and girls across the country, we want to remind Muslims across the world of the impermissibility of the practice of child marriage in Islam. For a full overview of the negative impacts the Iraqi Parliament’s amendments to Personal Status Law would have, we encourage you to read the statement by our friends at Musawah: https://lnkd.in/g9__uefF
