📣 Family law reform at #HRC57 - Join us! A window of opportunity for global mobilization towards #FamilyLawReform has opened with a recent Resolution adopted by the Human Rights Council in October 2023. 📢 BREAKING: Proposed Changes to Personal Status Law in Iraq Could Legalize Child Marriage We at Musawah stand in solidarity with Iraqi women and activists fighting to protect their rights against the proposed amendments to the 1959 Personal Status Law. These changes threaten to legalize child marriage and further entrench injustices against women in cases of divorce, custody and inheritance, returning women to a state of legal and economic marginalization and vulnerability, undermining decades of progress for women’s rights. ⚖️ Our statement highlights: 💥 The great harm posed to women and children by discriminatory family laws. 💥 The need for justice, dignity, and equality in line with Islamic values and human rights. 💥 A call to religious and political leaders to reject this bill and stand with the women and girls of Iraq. Join us in standing against this rollback of rights. Together, we must demand a future where ALL women and girls are protected, empowered, and free. 👉 Read the full statement on our website: https://lnkd.in/g9__uefF #Musawah #WomenRights #StopTheBill #Equality #IraqiWomen #NoToChildMarriage #JusticeForAll #MuslimWomen #HumanRights #DignityAndJustice #musawahmovement #freeourfamilylaws #muslimfamilies #muslimfamilylaw

Disturbing developments in #Iraq. “Some religious sects would support lowering the age of marriage to nine years old . . . amending the Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959 will only serve to increase girls’ risk of child marriage and subsequent abuses including early and forced pregnancy, domestic violence, poverty, and limited education and career opportunities.”- Hyshyama Hamin Equality Now #Iraq #ChildMarriage #FreeOurFamilyLaws https://lnkd.in/d2aCdzMp

While the long-awaited amendments to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) are currently with the Attorney General (AG), Muslim women’s rights activists remain concerned about the multiple delays and the lack of transparency on this key piece of legislation. #FreeOurFamilyLaws #MMDA #SriLanka https://lnkd.in/dJCMQbXM Musawah Equality Now Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) CLADEM FEMNET - African Women's Development and Communication Network Women's Learning Partnership for Rights, Development, and Peace UN Women
