The Burney Breast Unit at St Helens Hospital is now home to a new piece of cutting-edge equipment that will be a huge boost to patients thanks to our very own MWL NHS Charity and a gift in will from a former patient. The ‘Faxitron’ provides our breast cancer surgical team with immediate access to high-resolution imaging and biopsy reporting during an operation. Miss Leena Chagla, Lead Clinician, said: “The ‘Faxitron’ machine enables us to take an X-ray and assess the specimen of the cancer we remove surgically. Having this machine with us during an operation saves time, both in theatre and in clinic, as well as improving patient outcomes. “A big thank you to all those who made it possible, especially the Charity Team and Miss Sonia Bathla, Consultant, for expediting the installation. This will make a huge difference and benefit many patients in the local community”. To find out more about MWL NHS Charity, it's impact and how you can get involved, contact hello@mwlnhscharity.org

Whiston Hospital is the first in Merseyside to offer patients with suspected lung cancers a new diagnostic procedure called navigational bronchoscopy with radial probe. It is performed using the latest, advanced technology which helps clinicians to reach much deeper into the lungs to take vital tissue samples from lung abnormalities (nodules) to see if they are benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The tissue obtained during this procedure can be used for diagnosis and staging of cancer disease all in one procedure. Dr Joanne Heaton, Respiratory Consultant, said: “Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in combating lung cancer, which claims the lives of 35,000 individuals every year in the UK. “We are delighted to be able to offer this procedure now. There are a host of benefits for our patients who previously would have been referred to hospitals outside of the area for similar investigations, which could have led to possible delays in their treatment.’’ Fantastic work team! #TeamMWL

Take a look at the incredible new skylights that have just been installed in Whiston Hospital's Maternity Theatres. Providing safe and quality care is always the team's priority, but this year they also wanted to focus on improving the experience of patients and their families and the installation of the skylights follows feedback from people they cared for as well as team member's own experience of being parents. Ria Agass Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, said: "Lots of our patients have had a long and emotive journey to get to the birth of their baby, so it makes a huge difference to be in a really calm and tranquil environment which is exactly what the skylights help provide".
