About us

My Dog is My Home is a national organization dedicated to preserving the human-animal bond in circumstances of homelessness. Due to a general "no pets allowed" rule within social services, people experiencing homelessness are often asked to decide between their companion animals or shelter. We don't believe this is an ultimatum anyone should have to face. OUR MISSION My Dog is My Home's mission is to increase access to shelter and housing for people experiencing homelessness with companion animals. By securing their ability to maintain their most important relationships and find adequate shelter, we ensure every family’s right to build a home. OUR VISION We envision equitable access to home for all people and all families.

SAVE THE DATE the My Dog Is My Home Conference 2025, scheduled to take place virtually from March 25 - 27, 2025. Early Bird registration open on November 1, 2024. About the featured family: Ruby and her children - Bryson, Mason, and Kaison - are photographed with their dog, Niva. Niva was adopted from the Cincinnati SPCA. The family was not sure how Niva would be with kids, but she immediately gravitated to Ruby’s youngest child. The entire family is currently living in permanent supportive housing, operated by Found House IHN. Ruby and her family lost everything, and to have found stability with Niva means everything to them. Losing Niva would have been like losing a family member.

On April 22nd 2024, the Supreme Court of the United States heard the case of Johnson v. Grants Pass. This sets the stage for the most significant Supreme Court case about the rights of people experiencing homelessness in decades. At its core, this case will decide whether cities are allowed to punish people for things like sleeping outside with a pillow or blanket, even when there are no safe shelter options. A decision will be made by June 30th, 2024. Johnson v. Grants Pass is a court case originally filed in 2018 that determined it is cruel and unusual punishment to arrest or ticket people for sleeping outside when they have no other safe place to go. The case started in Grants Pass, Oregon when the city began issuing tickets to people sleeping in public, even when there were not enough safe, accessible shelter beds. Grants Pass, like many cities in America, is thousands of housing units short of what is needed. That shortfall will not be solved by putting more people in jail or issuing more tickets. The solution to homelessness is safe, decent, and affordable housing for everybody. Learn more about the case and what you can do to show support for real solutions, not criminalization: https://lnkd.in/e3U-MmiK
